R&A Student Tour Series 2026/27: the entry requirements that matter before Meloneras
The Meloneras event on Gran Canaria, 27–29 October 2026, is the second scheduled qualifier in the R&A Student Tour Series 2026/27. Ahead of that event, GOLFTWITT reviewed the governing body's official five-page Terms of Competition and its current event calendar. These are season-specific eligibility and playing conditions, not changes to the Rules of Golf or to the World Handicap System. The terms themselves do not give a definitive original publication date, and similar handicap requirements were in place last season; they must not be portrayed as amendments enacted on 26 October.
Two alternative ways to meet the playing standard
At entry, a student must either appear 1st–4000th on the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) or have a qualifying Handicap Index of no more than +0.0 for men or 2.0 for women. These are alternatives, not cumulative requirements. In golf notation, +0.0 signifies a scratch-level threshold, not a conventional handicap of 1.0.
Where a WHS Handicap Index does not exist, the terms allow a current equivalent exact handicap issued by a recognized authority. But if the entrant holds both a WHS Handicap Index and another recognized handicap, the entry must use the WHS index. Failure to comply with section 1(b) carries disqualification, not merely a request to correct the form.
The handicap certified on the date of entry remains the figure used, even if it changes before registration closes. Players not entered through the applicable central handicap database must upload certification when instructed; an incomplete certification can cause an entry to be rejected.
Education, residence of the institution and ages
The series is for male and female students enrolled in tertiary education at institutions outside the United States and Mexico. The geographic test concerns where the institution is located, not the player's nationality. Entrants must have turned 16 by 1 January 2026 and must be no older than 28 on 31 December 2027.
The rules also address forthcoming enrolment, recent course completion and work-placement or study-abroad arrangements. An exchange/placement may count, subject to conditions, for up to 12 months. Competitors must be genuinely registered students and able to present appropriate student identification.
Eligible is not the same as selected
A normal qualifying field contains 75 players: 54 men and 21 women. Priority categories, including certain international team appearances, earlier series winners and previous high finishers, receive places first. Remaining spots follow the eligible WAGR order and then exact handicap. Equal handicaps at the ballot point are separated by time of entry. Being in WAGR's top 4,000 therefore does not guarantee a start.
Conditions in force on the course
The R&A has expressly adopted Model Local Rule G-10, limiting clubs used for a stroke to 46 inches, putters excepted. G-6 prohibits unauthorized motorized transport, while retaining the committee's authorization process, including qualifying disability-related requests. G-12 bars written, printed or electronic green-reading materials to help assess a putt's line; a first breach draws the general penalty and a second leads to disqualification.
Caddies are prohibited during the round, as is receiving advice or coaching. Events are 54-hole stroke play, with no cut; a tie for the title is settled by hole-by-hole play-off. These provisions are binding in this series because the committee has adopted them; they should never be generalized to every golf competition.
Road to St Andrews
The top 30 men and top 12 women in the respective Order of Merit after the qualifying events advance to the Series Final. The R&A's current calendar specifies 29–31 March 2027 at St Andrews, on the Jubilee and Old Course. Overall series champions gain designated exemptions: the men's champion to the 2027 Amateur Championship and 2027 St Andrews Links Trophy, and the women's champion to the 2027 Women's Amateur Championship and 2027 St Rule Trophy.
The season opened 6–8 October 2026 at Killeen Castle, Ireland. Meloneras takes place 27–29 October, but its entry window closed on 8 October. The Le Sella qualifier is scheduled for 23–25 February 2027, with the Portugal stop still awaiting confirmation. Entrants should always verify any event-specific handbook and the committee's latest instructions.
