PGA Tour Q-School 2026: Exactly Five 2027 Cards, with a Playoff for the Final Spot

Official 2026 Q-School rules explained: five PGA Tour cards, a playoff for the fifth spot, stage dates and Korn Ferry Tour priority. Existing rules, not a new amendment.

Exactly five PGA Tour cards — and a playoff for the last one

With another wave of First Stage tournaments approaching, GOLFTWITT has reviewed the PGA TOUR's official 14-page regulations for the 2026 Q-School. The key distinction is simple but consequential: five players will secure PGA Tour membership for 2027. If several players tie for the final qualifying position, they must decide it through a hole-by-hole playoff, rather than all receiving cards.

This is an explanation of existing 2026 qualifying regulations, not a new rule adopted on October 26. The five-card limit with a playoff for the final spot was introduced at the 2025 Q-School. Earlier editions allowed the top five and players tied at the cutoff to qualify.

Four stages and the remaining dates

The qualification pathway has Pre-Qualifying (54 holes), First Stage, Second Stage and Final Stage (72 holes at each of the latter three). Exemption categories allow eligible entrants to bypass certain early stages; advancing from one stage is otherwise based on that stage's results.

The first First Stage sites concluded October 20–23. The next First Stage windows are October 27–30 and November 3–6. Second Stage runs December 1–4 and Final Stage is scheduled for December 10–13, 2026. The 72-hole finale takes place in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, at TPC Sawgrass's Dye's Valley Course and Sawgrass Country Club's East/West courses. Competitors play two rounds on each course. The entry deadline for those eligible to enter Second Stage or Final Stage is November 23 at 5 p.m. EST.

What a tie for fifth actually triggers

Section 8 directs that a tie affecting the last PGA Tour membership place be settled in a hole-by-hole playoff immediately after the scheduled final round. The chief referee may move it to the following day if darkness, weather or other conditions make an immediate playoff impracticable.

The rule must not be confused with score matching. Combined third- and fourth-round scores, followed by other stipulated comparisons, are used to order qualifying players on the initial 2027 eligibility list when necessary. They do not replace the on-course playoff for the final card.

Korn Ferry and PGA Tour Americas opportunities

The next 40 finishers and ties after the five PGA Tour qualifiers earn Korn Ferry Tour membership for 2027. Within that group, the first 25 and ties are protected until the third periodic reorder; the remainder are subject to the second reorder. Remaining finalists receive lower-priority Korn Ferry Tour status, subject to the first reorder, and PGA Tour Americas membership. That conditional Korn Ferry status does not guarantee a start in any particular tournament.

There is also a route to partial status before the finale. A First Stage site medalist and ties may earn PGA Tour Americas membership; a Second Stage medalist and ties may earn Korn Ferry Tour membership, unless their later performance provides a better category.

Why the fine print matters

A card's practical value depends on category priority and the tour's periodic reorders, not merely the word “membership.” The tournament regulations also distinguish qualification from final eligibility for membership: players generally must be at least 18 to become members, even where a younger player is permitted to compete in Q-School.
