Tony Finau is going back to Vidanta Vallarta, where he won the Mexico Open in 2023 and set the event's 72-hole scoring record. But the former champion enters the October 29–November 1, 2026 tournament in a very different position: PGA TOUR's official October 26 preview puts him at No. 104 on the FedExCup Fall points list. The number makes his return especially intriguing — with an important qualification about his playing status.
A crowded battle around 100th place
The TOUR's pre-event standings snapshot places Lee Hodges at No. 100, the crucial dividing line for full 2027 eligibility among players without other exemptions. Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen follows at No. 101, Finau sits 104th, A.J. Ewart is 105th and Rico Hoey 106th. Just above the line are Max Greyserman (99th), Chandler Phillips (98th) and Taylor Pendrith (96th). These are the positions reported ahead of the Mexico Open, not a prediction of where anybody will finish the season.
Here is the nuance that matters: Finau's 104th-place ranking does not mean he has already lost his 2027 PGA TOUR card. In an official September explainer, the TOUR identified Finau as exempt through 2027. The top-100 threshold is especially consequential for competitors without a separate exemption; those outside it can fall into conditional priority categories. Finau still has a strong incentive to collect points and improve his ranking, but presenting Mexico as an immediate win-or-lose-your-card test for him would be misleading.
A course with a personal history
Finau's memories of Vallarta are unusually good. He won the 2023 tournament at 24 under par, 260 strokes, still the event's 72-hole record entering this week. He tied for second at 16 under in 2022 and finished tied for 13th at 11 under in 2024. Those performances make a return to a familiar setting more than a sentimental subplot: he has repeatedly shown that his game can work here.
Recent form, however, gives him something to prove. PGA TOUR's official player preview lists a tie for 41st at the Baycurrent Classic earlier this October, a missed cut at the Bank of Utah Championship, and a tie for 61st at the August Wyndham Championship. Mexico presents an opportunity to reverse that run as the fall calendar moves toward its conclusion.
What this week's tournament offers
The 2026 VidantaWorld Mexico Open runs October 29–November 1 at Vidanta Vallarta, now configured as a 7,337-yard par 71. The purse is $6 million and the champion will earn 500 FedExCup points. It is the fifth of eight FedExCup Fall events, increasing the urgency for players around the top-100 cut. Defending champion Brian Campbell, who beat Aldrich Potgieter in a playoff last year, is among those in the field alongside Finau.
At publication time the 2026 tournament had not started; no current scores, round results or leaderboard positions are being claimed. The information above was checked against PGA TOUR's official field, calendar, historical results and FedExCup eligibility guidance.
