A lengthy closure is coming to San Antonio's public golf trail

On October 23, 2026, Alamo City Golf Trail announced a substantial improvement project at Mission Del Lago Golf Course. Work is scheduled to begin in January 2027, and the operator says the course will be closed from January through September 2027. A specific reopening date has not yet been announced.

The course is located at 1250 Mission Grande, San Antonio, Texas 78221, south of the city center near Mitchell Lake. As a municipal facility, it normally welcomes public play rather than operating as an exclusive private club.

What's being upgraded

The official announcement identifies three priorities. The grass will be renewed using Platinum Paspalum, the liners of bunkers and ponds will be restored, and the short-game practice area will receive improvements. The operator frames the program as an investment in course conditions, the quality of the golfing experience and the long-term sustainability of the facility.

The scope should not be overstated. The notice does not specify a hole-by-hole redesign, promise that all 18 greens will be rebuilt, or identify a new course architect. A course improvement program and a complete architectural redesign are different things, and only the former has been confirmed.

Why Mission Del Lago matters

Denis Griffiths designed Mission Del Lago, with the course dating to 1989 according to its official profile. Its 18-hole layout occupies comparatively open land, providing a links-inspired test shaped by wind, doglegs, gullies, ponds and guarded, elevated greens. Players can choose tees covering approximately 5,300 to 7,044 yards. The existing practice facilities include a driving range, a putting green and a chipping area.

Mission Del Lago belongs to a network of eight city-owned municipal golf facilities managed by the nonprofit Municipal Golf Association San Antonio, trading as Alamo City Golf Trail. That makes the extended interruption relevant to visiting golfers and local regulars alike: this is a public-access course rather than a members-only property.

What golfers need to check

As of October 26, 2026, no exact last playing day in January, first available tee time after construction, or post-renovation green fee has been published in the operator's notice. Because the closure is described as extending through September, visitors should not assume they will be able to play during that month. The operator's official website also lists alternative public venues on the trail.
