Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland — 9 October 2026. Killarney Golf & Fishing Club has begun a substantial upgrade of its 18-hole Mahony’s Point course. Construction started on 5 October, with the work scheduled across two phases running through spring 2028. The club's stated priority is to enhance play without sacrificing the identity of its renowned lakeside setting.

What will change on the course?

The programme centres on redesigning and rebuilding every bunker complex and teeing area on Mahony’s Point. This is an upgrade to the existing course, rather than an announcement of a new layout. The intention is to improve the way these strategic features play and present while respecting the course's established parkland character. The club's announcement does not specify engineering methods or publish definitive construction drawings for every hole; those details should not be assumed.

Architecture and delivery team

Golf course architect Jeff Lynch of ReGolf leads the design work. He has developed the plans with the club, its Mahony’s Point Steering Group and Synergy Golf. The selected construction partner is Atlantic Golf Construction, based in County Kerry. Members approved the project earlier in 2026, providing the basis for detailed planning and the start of on-site works in October.

Two construction windows

Phase one began on 5 October 2026, with completion scheduled by April 2027. The club expects the upgraded holes to return to play for the 2027 season. Phase two is planned from October 2027 until April 2028, when the improvements across all 18 holes are due to be finished. Those are project targets, not guaranteed exact dates on which every tee time will be available.

A setting worth preserving

Founded in 1893, Killarney Golf & Fishing Club occupies a distinctive place in Irish golf. Mahony’s Point has previously hosted the Women’s Irish Open and is especially admired for its 174-yard, par-three 18th, played with the dramatic landscape of Lough Leane nearby. The design challenge is to refresh the bunkers and teeing grounds without erasing the qualities that make the experience memorable.

What visiting golfers need to know

The club offers a visitor tee-time booking route through its official website. Yet the 9 October statement does not establish which holes will be playable on particular construction dates, nor does it set temporary green fees. Anyone planning a round should consult live booking information and contact the club about any restrictions before travelling.
