The U.S. Ryder Cup selection race has a new scoring system. On September 9, 2026, the PGA of America approved the criteria for selecting Team USA for the 2027 Ryder Cup. Players will receive preset points for their finishing positions rather than points tied to tournament earnings. This is an approved competition-selection policy, not a change to the Rules of Golf and not a decision newly made in October.
The 2027-only qualifying window
Unlike past cycles, 2026 results will not count toward Team USA's 2027 points total. The first qualifying event is The American Express, January 18–24, 2027. The race concludes at the BMW Championship, August 16–22, 2027.
The program covers 31 events: the four men's major championships, THE PLAYERS Championship, eight PGA Tour Signature Events, two FedExCup playoff tournaments and 16 regular full-field PGA Tour events. The shorter window concentrates the ranking on performances closer to the Ryder Cup itself. It also means a big win late in 2026 cannot directly bank selection points for September 2027.
Points are set by event category and finishing place
A victory in the Masters, PGA Championship, U.S. Open or The Open is worth 3,000 points. Winning THE PLAYERS is worth 2,850. Victories in one of the eight Signature Events, the FedEx St. Jude Championship or the BMW Championship are worth 2,250. Winners of the eligible regular full-field PGA Tour events receive 1,500.
The official table rewards other finishes too. Second place, for example, carries 1,818 points at a major, 1,734 at THE PLAYERS, 1,362 at a Signature or qualifying playoff event, and 909 in an eligible full-field tournament. The full points schedule runs well beyond the podium. Eligible American competitors must make the cut and complete the event to earn their share of the finish-position points.
Two exceptions matter. Opposite-field PGA Tour events do not award Ryder Cup selection points. The team-format Zurich Classic of New Orleans uses a distinctive distribution: partners must independently meet U.S. team eligibility criteria to earn points.
Six qualifiers, six captain's selections
Following the BMW Championship, the top six eligible Americans in the standings secure automatic team places. Captain Jim Furyk then selects six additional players, with those picks scheduled for the week beginning August 30, 2027, after the TOUR Championship. The final U.S. roster therefore consists of twelve golfers.
A high points ranking alone is not a waiver of separate eligibility requirements. Equally, these procedures do not apply to Team Europe, which has its own qualification and membership rules.
What changes for fans and players
The principal distinction is the move away from a formula based on prize money. The announced scale still makes major victories twice as valuable as wins in ordinary full-field events, but it gives players a fixed, published set of incentives from the outset. It also draws a clear line between those who play themselves onto the team and those chosen by the captain for form, partnerships or tactical balance.
The 2027 Ryder Cup takes place September 17–19 at Adare Manor, Ireland. The selection structure is confirmed now; the six automatic U.S. representatives will not be determined until August 2027.
