Royal County Down proposes changes to nine of its celebrated links holes
Royal County Down Golf Club in Newcastle, Northern Ireland, has filed a formal application for course alterations. Application LA07/2026/1264/F was received by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council on 15 October 2026 and validated on 16 October. Further reporting appeared on 19–21 October. These are proposals, not already authorised construction works.
What would change?
Project planning consultant Clyde Shanks lists nine Championship Links holes: 1, 3, 5, 11, 12, 15, 16, 17 and 18. The proposal includes new or relocated tees, revisions to greens, additional bunkers, changes to fairway configurations and modest reshaping of dune terrain. The planning statement described by local newspaper Mourne Observer also covers the 1st and 2nd holes on the Annesley Links, the club's second course.
Golf trade publications describe three new tees for hole 1, a new green on hole 5 and more significant changes to teeing areas and fairways at holes 16 and 17. The 16th green is also expected to be reshaped. The design calls for sand to be sourced where possible from selected parts of the property, commonly known as borrow areas. Specialist reporting identifies Mackenzie & Ebert, whose portfolio includes work at traditional British links courses, as the architects.
Why does the architecture matter?
Royal County Down is prized for natural dunes, exposure to coastal winds, demanding sightlines and constantly changing angles of approach. Moving a bunker or teeing area can fundamentally change the choice between an aggressive and a conservative shot. The challenge is to introduce strategic variety without diluting the course's historic character.
According to the consultant, the intention is to reinforce Royal County Down's global standing and its value to Northern Ireland golf tourism. Some commentators have linked the work to a possible future Open Championship bid, but no such bid, hosting decision or official causal link has been confirmed.
Approval and timing
The preliminary public consultation closed on 23 September 2026. As of 25 October, the full application is under consideration by the council; planning permission has not been granted. Reports have suggested potential work during the 2027 off-season, contingent on consent, but no final closure or reopening dates have been announced.
Can visitors play?
The club is at 36 Golf Links Road, Newcastle, County Down, BT33 0AN, Northern Ireland. Visitor tee times are available by enquiry but very limited. Its official booking page lists prices for 19 April–15 October 2027 of £495 for the Championship Links and £150 for the Annesley Links. Golfers should confirm availability directly, particularly if construction plans progress.
