The 2026 Race to Dubai regular season is over, and for China's Wenyi Ding the final standings have delivered an all-too-familiar disappointment. The 21-year-old finished 71st, one place outside the group of 70 eligible players heading to the DP World Tour Play-Offs. American Ryan Gerard occupies the crucial 70th position on the final published qualifier list.
The sting is sharper because Ding began the last regular-season event, the Genesis Championship in South Korea, exactly on the qualifying line. In its official pre-tournament preview, the DP World Tour identified him as No. 70 and noted a remarkable parallel: he had also missed the Abu Dhabi play-offs by a single spot in 2025. Twelve months later, that narrow miss has been repeated.
Ding did not have a disastrous Genesis Championship. At Woo Jeong Hills Country Club he posted rounds of 74, 67, 70 and 69, finishing on 280 strokes, four under par, in a tie for 34th. Even so, movement elsewhere in the season-long rankings pushed him below the threshold. The final published qualifier list places Gerard 70th, Ding 71st, Nathan Kimsey 72nd, Francesco Molinari 73rd, JC Ritchie 74th and Yurav Premlall 75th. The public list does not state the precise points gap at the cut-off, so there is no sound basis for claiming how many points Ding lacked.
Japan's Yuto Katsuragawa won the Genesis Championship on October 25 with a 13-under-par total of 271, two shots clear of French players Frederic Lacroix and Martin Couvra. Katsuragawa's victory secured his future on tour and entry into the play-offs. Ding's solid week, by contrast, could not deliver the same outcome. Their fortunes illustrate how sharply the final event can redraw the season-long picture.
The opening play-off tournament, the Abu Dhabi Aldar Championship, takes place at Yas Links on November 5–8. Only the top 50 after that event qualify for the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai on November 12–15. The thresholds should not be confused: 70 players reach Abu Dhabi, while 50 progress to Dubai. Crucially, finishing 71st does not mean Ding has lost his DP World Tour playing rights. The leading 100 in the Race to Dubai after the regular season retain full status for 2027.
For Ding, then, this is not a question of whether he belongs on the tour. It is about missing its biggest November stages by exactly one ranking position — for a second successive season — despite surviving a demanding final week in Korea. The lesson of the 2026 cut-off is that the play-off race is decided over the whole season, not simply by avoiding a bad finish on Sunday.
