A season ends on the last five holes
The Stifel Charity Classic, the opening Charles Schwab Cup playoff event on PGA TOUR Champions, concluded in St. Louis on October 25, 2026. While Rory Sabbatini's dramatic victory attracted the headlines, one of the day's most consequential results unfolded near the qualification bubble. Chad Campbell bogeyed three of his final five holes and failed to remain among the top 54 golfers advancing to the next playoff tournament. PGA TOUR's official report puts his shortfall at the equivalent of just $402 relative to the qualifying line.
Campbell's scorecard reads 71–71–74, a 216 total (+3) that placed him 64th at Norwood Hills Country Club. He was level par through the first two rounds, but his closing 74 altered the outcome of his postseason. PGA TOUR highlighted the three late bogeys as the pivotal sequence. The $402 figure describes the narrow money-based qualification margin reported by the Tour; it is not a penalty assessed for the bogeys.
Two advance, two go home
Only the leading 54 players in the Charles Schwab Cup standings move on from the opening event. Tim Petrovic and Henrik Stenson climbed inside that limit. Petrovic produced rounds of 66, 71 and 68 to share eighth at 205 (−8). Stenson finished tied for third at 201 (−12) and moved to 41st in the Cup standings, according to PGA TOUR; Petrovic improved to 53rd.
Their gains came at the expense of others. J.J. Henry was eliminated alongside Campbell. The resulting contrast is a defining feature of playoff golf: a strong week can extend a season, while one poor late stretch can close it, even for a player who entered the event inside the qualifying range.
Sabbatini wins, and the field narrows again
Rory Sabbatini won the 54-hole tournament after a final-round 62 (−9) gave him 199 (−14), one ahead of Darren Clarke's 200 (−13). Steven Alker, Stenson and Mario Tiziani tied for third on 201 (−12). Golftwitt has covered Sabbatini's victory separately; this article focuses on the battle for survival below the top of the leaderboard.
The next stop is the Simmons Bank Championship, October 30–November 1, 2026, in Little Rock, Arkansas. The field will then contract from 54 to 36 for the Charles Schwab Cup Championship, November 12–15, in Phoenix. Campbell's narrow miss illustrates how the ranking cut can make a late bogey just as consequential as a tournament-winning birdie.
