Mirabel Ting opened the Maybank Championship on October 29 with a three-over-par 75, but singled out her driving as a positive and explained two costly encounters with penalty areas. The Malaysian golfer, competing at home, spoke in an official post-round interview published by ASAP Sports. The LPGA leaderboard confirms her 75 and a share of 70th place after Thursday. The tournament is being played on the West Course at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club and runs through November 1.
Strong driving, difficult approaches
Ting felt she had driven the ball exceptionally well—possibly better than at any other point this year. But she said the dispersion of her subsequent shots was too wide. Even after positioning herself to attack the flag, she frequently left the ball a long distance from the hole. That meant lengthy putts instead of clear opportunities to make up strokes.
The distinction matters: good shots with the driver do not automatically produce a good score if approach play leaves difficult putts. Her comments describe her own assessment, not a published statistical ranking of driving accuracy.
The 15th: a shift in wind changed the shot
The clearest example came on the 15th hole. Ting recalled a distance of about 180–181 yards to the flag. Michelle had suggested playing approximately 165 yards while the wind was helping, but the wind changed direction before the shot. The ball went into the water. The subsequent sequence involved a bunker, a shot onto the green and a single putt; Ting ultimately made double bogey.
Another visit to a penalty area came at the 11th. After proceeding from the designated drop zone she managed to escape with a bogey. Her post-round remarks treated those recoveries as important: the damage could have been greater.
Rest instead of another rushed technical overhaul
Asked what she would work on that afternoon, Ting did not promise a long putting session or an immediate swing fix. She spoke of tension and pressure and said she intended to go home, rest and avoid dwelling on the day.
As a personal example of fluctuating form, she recalled a competition in Connecticut where a round of five under par was followed by five over the next day. She did not present that memory as an excuse for her start in Kuala Lumpur. Her approach was to play the next round with the game she had and learn from whatever happened.
The 75 (+3) is a first-round score, not the final result of the Maybank Championship. This new interview offers an explanation of Ting's decisions and feelings under changing wind and pressure. It does not establish a technical cure or predict Friday's score.
