TGL confirms a new team-roster system for 2027
On October 20, 2026, professional team-golf league TGL explained how its clubs assembled their squads for the 2027 season. The headline change is straightforward: every club now carries five rostered golfers rather than four, while only three are selected to compete in each match. The addition of Motor City Golf Club also increases the competition from six teams to seven.
These are TGL-specific roster and selection regulations. They are not amendments to the R&A/USGA Rules of Golf, the World Handicap System or equipment standards.
Five on the roster does not mean five in a match
In the preceding season, clubs maintained four-player rosters. For the 2027 competition, the extra slot gives managers five players to choose from when naming a three-person match team. The fourth and fifth roster members are not automatically competing in that match merely because they are registered for the season.
The benefit is strategic depth: clubs can select different combinations against different opponents and have greater flexibility when players are unavailable. Crucially, the official announcement does not add a fourth or fifth competitor to the playing lineup, nor does it announce a separate change to the match scoring format.
How the five-player squads were constructed
TGL permitted its six returning clubs to retain up to four players from 2026. Certain alternates who played for a team during that season could also be retained. Teams then filled the remaining positions from a pool of available players through a round-by-round selection process.
Motor City Golf Club, the expansion franchise, held the opening selection in each round. The six returning teams selected in reverse order of their positions in the final 2026 SoFi Cup standings after the playoffs. Importantly, retained players counted as selections. A club retaining four players therefore waited until the other teams also had four before selecting its fifth.
This distinction matters: the process was not a simple new-player draft awarding every existing club an equal series of immediate new selections. Retention decisions directly affected when each team could add somebody.
The first trade demonstrates the process
The off-season also produced the league's first player trade. Shane Lowry moved from The Bay Golf Club to Boston Common Golf. In return, The Bay received Boston's fourth selection in the 2027 roster-building process, which it used to select Ryan Fox. The Bay also obtained a one-time option to swap a selection position with Boston in one of the next three TGL off-seasons, plus commercial considerations that were not publicly specified.
This is a verified example of roster formation in action, not evidence that every future transaction must carry identical terms.
When the rule applies and what viewers should watch
The league has confirmed all seven five-player squads, making 35 players in total, including 12 new TGL competitors. TGL says its new season begins on December 27, 2026. Consequently, these regulations apply to the 2027 TGL season, even though the opening date falls in the final days of calendar year 2026.
Fans checking lineups should distinguish the five players signed to a club's season roster from the three selected for an individual match. A five-person roster does not promise that every member will appear in every fixture.
Regulatory status: officially announced TGL competition rules, explained October 20, 2026, for the 2027 season. Not a proposal, and not a change to the general Rules of Golf.
