A possible turning point for Kelly Tan
Ahead of the Maybank Championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysian media have focused on Kelly Tan's comments about her future in professional golf. On 27 October, Stadium Astro aired a report indicating that this year's tournament could be among Tan's last appearances on the LPGA Tour. New Straits Times followed on 28 October with a report that she had hinted her playing career may be nearing its conclusion.
That distinction matters: a possible final LPGA appearance is not the same as a confirmed retirement from professional golf. No formal retirement announcement, final tournament or departure date has been confirmed. The reporting follows a pre-tournament media appearance rather than an official announcement by the LPGA.
Why it matters to Malaysian golf
Tan is among Malaysia's most experienced female professionals. She first joined the LPGA Tour in 2014 and represented Malaysia at the Rio and Tokyo Olympic Games. In the team-format Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational she recorded runner-up finishes in 2022 and 2023. Her career helped establish a Malaysian presence in elite women's professional golf during a period when relatively few compatriots competed regularly at that level.
A new generation is now emerging. Fellow Malaysian Maybank entrants include Mirabel Ting, who has secured her 2027 LPGA Tour card, Natasha Oon, Genevieve Ling and Liyana Durisic. Tan has previously welcomed the growing number of Malaysian women competing professionally, underscoring the significance of that transition.
Her immediate focus: Maybank Championship
The 2026 Maybank Championship runs 29 October–1 November on the West Course at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club. The LPGA lists 78 players, a US$3 million purse and a 72-hole, no-cut format. Tan is entered on a tournament sponsor invitation.
The next four rounds will give Tan another opportunity to compete in front of a home crowd, whatever decision she eventually makes about her future. As of 28 October, her participation is confirmed; calling this a farewell appearance would go beyond the evidence.
