There’s a sad truth about gear: Just about everything has an expiration date — at least when it comes to top performance — and that’s especially true for your clubs. While some clubs can seemingly last forever, there’s a certain point when every club has reached its peak potential and is no longer benefiting your game.

That can be a difficult reality to accept, especially when you’ve spent a lot of money. But if you want to play your best — and take advantage of all the latest club technology has to offer — it’s important to know when to say when.

Below, Fairway Jockey president Wadeh Maroun shares the top 3 signs that it’s time to invest in a new set of irons.

  1. Technology gap outpaces your set’s design era

“Iron technology moves in real jumps — face materials (multi-material inserts, forged hollow bodies), CG placement and variable face thickness have measurably changed forgiveness and distance in the last decade,” Maroun said. “A set designed five years ago isn’t ‘worn out’ so much as it’s working with an older set of engineering assumptions. This matters most if you’re a mid-to-high handicapper, since forgiveness tech has advanced faster than blade/players-iron tech.”

  1. Your swing has changed, but your equipment is static

“Shaft flex, lie angle and even head design are all tuned to a swing speed, angle of attack and tempo at a point in time,” Maroun said. “Bodies change — strength, flexibility, injury history, even just years of accumulated swing changes from lessons. The mismatch isn’t about the club degrading — it’s about the fit degrading relative to you. This is arguably the single biggest ‘invisible’ reason people should reassess, and it has nothing to do with how the clubs look or feel.”

  1. Material fatigue changes performance before it’s visible

“Grooves and face materials degrade gradually under repeated impact stress, and the performance loss (spin, energy transfer) often precedes any visible wear,” Maroun said. “This is why ‘they still look fine’ isn’t a reliable test — feel and eyeball inspection lag behind actual mechanical wear.”

Of course, if you still aren’t sure whether or not your gear is still ideal for you, there’s one way to know for sure: Schedule a fitting at your local True Spec, where you can pit your current set against the latest releases to see just how much new clubs can benefit your game.

Srixon ZXi5 Custom Irons

Mizuno Pro M-15 Custom Irons

Mizuno Pro M-13 and M-15, part of the all-new Modern Series. Sitting alongside the existing Signature Series (S-1 and S-3), the Modern Series represents a fresh evolution in forged performance. Engineered for players seeking a bit more speed, forgiveness, and playability, while maintaining the unmistakable Mizuno Pro shaping and feel. The Modern Series debuts with two distinct models, each designed for a specific type of ball striker. The M-13 features tour-preferred proportions and a faster, more consistent flight profile, while the M-15 delivers higher launch and additional forgiveness that blends smoothly through the set. Both retain the craftsmanship and forged heritage that define every Mizuno Pro iron.

TaylorMade Qi Max Custom Irons

SUPERIOR FEEL AND SOUND

What the golfers perceive as feel is largely the result of the sound the club makes at impact. The two areas most responsible for sound and feel are the top line and the face. In the Qi MAX, a new internal stability bar and ECHO® Damper material have been strategically positioned to support these areas, reduce vibrations, and deliver premium feel in a game improvement iron.

STRAIGHT DISTANCE

Proven TaylorMade patented face technology controls face flexibility to reduce “cut” spin that can result from fast face iron designs, allowing golfers to experience straighter shots throughout the entire set.

INDIVIDUAL HEAD OPTIMIZATION

Each head has been designed to deliver specific performance for that individual iron. Starting with a foundation of maximum distance and forgiveness, the face design is tailored to deliver the launch and spin needed for straight, consistent shots with each iron.

OPTIMIZED BALL FLIGHT

FLTD CG™ strategically places the CG lowest in the long irons and higher as the set progresses. The design produces enhanced launch and playability in the long irons and precision and control in the scoring clubs.

REFINED PLAYERS SHAPE

Refined shaping reflects internal tech features to create an aspirational players look. Shaping includes a confidence-inspiring thinner top line and blade length that blend seamlessly with a reduced offset hosel.

Titleist T150 Black Vapor Limited Edition Irons

Cobra 3DP Tour Custom Irons

The KING 3DP TOUR irons utilize 3D printing technology to unlock a new realm of performance. Their one of a kind design features the most forgiving blade shape on the market, delivering the forgiveness that aspirational players need, and the sleek looks and soft feel that better players desire.

3D PRINTED STEEL CONSTRUCTION

Each iron is fully 3D printed from 316 stainless steel. 3D printing provides significant advantages over traditional methods of casting and forging, unlocking more design freedom and significant performance improvements.

FORGIVING PLAYERS BLADE SHAPE

3D printing has unlocked new design possibilities, enabling COBRA engineers to create a compact blade shape with the mass properties (high MOI, low CG) of a game improvement iron without sacrificing looks and soft feel that better players demand.

INTERNAL LATTICE STRUCTURE

COBRA took a muscle-back blade shape (similar in size and shape to the KING TOUR iron), and transformed the inside of the blade into a complex internal lattice structure to reduce the weight of the club by 33%. That discretionary weight was repositioned to optimize feel, CG position, and MOI.

REVOLUTIONARY FORGED FEEL

More Speed, More Consistency

Increased Distance with Improved Gapping

FLTD CG™ – Shaped for Elegant Performance

FEATURES

Enhanced Feel & Feedback

Substantially improved feel was a key focus when designing the 2025 P·790. Individual head optimization and advanced modal analysis, combined with SpeedFoam™ Air, deliver best-in-class forged feel with an explosive sensation at impact.

Faster Face, Greater Speed

The 2025 P·790 introduces an all-new ultra-high-strength, high-speed forged face material (4340M), which is 20% stronger than previous generations. This increased strength enables a thinner face, faster ball speeds, and a sweet spot up to 24% larger.*

*Comparison vs. 2023 P·790 7 iron.

Optimized CG for Precision & Distance

A faster 4340M face, individual head optimization, and FLTD CG™ technology precisely position the center of gravity (CG), delivering increased carry distances with ideal launch and spin for improved gapping throughout the set.

In 2025, the long irons feature an even lower CG for enhanced launch and playability, while the scoring clubs have a higher CG to improve spin rates and control. FLTD CG™ strategically shifts the center of gravity from low in the long irons to progressively higher in the short irons for optimal performance.

Refined Aesthetics & Turf Interaction

The all-new P·790 boasts a thinner topline for a cleaner look at address and an increased sole radius with a progressive leading edge. This design enhances turf interaction and promotes more consistent impact locations.
