Rory McIlroy and Patrick Reed: A new chapter in the Race to Dubai

Rory McIlroy and Patrick Reed, whose decade-long rivalry has been defined by tense clashes—from the 2016 Ryder Cup singles to the 2018 Masters final round, and the fractures caused by the LIV Golf-PGA Tour saga—find themselves in New Delhi this week. Both are chasing crucial points as the DP World Tour’s Race to Dubai approaches its conclusion. Reed currently leads the standings, while McIlroy, who is chasing his eighth season-long title to tie Colin Montgomerie’s record, sits in third. A year ago, this scenario seemed impossible; the event in India didn’t exist, and Reed was committed to LIV Golf’s 4Aces. Shifts in the schedule and personal career decisions have brought them together, where they were seen sharing a brief, cordial exchange during a photo op at the Delhi Golf Club. Both players have been complimentary throughout the season. Reed stated, “Any time I get to go play against Rory, it’s always fun because that means you get to play some amazing golf.” McIlroy expressed his respect for Reed’s performance, noting, “He’s a great competitor and he’s played great all year.” With Reed’s suspension concluding, he is set to rejoin the PGA Tour next year, having secured one of the 10 DP World Tour cards. The ultimate winner will be decided in a month’s time during the playoffs in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The current top five includes Patrick Reed, Eugenio Chacarra, Rory McIlroy, Casey Jarvis, and Aaron Rai.
