Welsh clubs get a prominent role in the 2027 senior-golf calendar
PGA TOUR Champions announced its 2027 schedule on 28 October 2026, confirming the ISPS HANDA Senior Open at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club in Wales for 22–25 July 2027. The host venue and championship dates had been announced previously; the new development is the event's inclusion in the complete tour schedule, following the confirmation of four Welsh qualifying venues earlier in October.
Royal Porthcawl will host the championship for the fourth time. Organiser Staysure Legends Tour describes the 2027 edition as the 40th Senior Open. It is one of the five major championships for the over-50 professional game, jointly sanctioned by Staysure Legends Tour and PGA TOUR Champions, with its results counting towards both tours' season-long standings.
Four qualifying venues on 19 July
Qualifying is scheduled for Monday 19 July 2027, three days before the championship's opening round. The four Welsh host clubs are:
- Southerndown Golf Club, near Bridgend;
- Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club, on the coast near Porthcawl;
- Machynys Golf Club, in Llanelli;
- Pennard Golf Club, on the Gower Peninsula near Swansea.
Pennard will stage a Senior Open qualifier for the first time, a particularly noteworthy development for the 1896-founded club. The three other venues have previously taken part in qualifying campaigns in 2014, 2017 and 2023. Tournament officials say information about entering the 2027 qualifiers will be released in the new year. No unannounced entry procedures, qualifying-place allocations or confirmed player lists should be inferred from the venue announcement.
Four different tests of Welsh golf
Each qualifying course offers distinct characteristics. Southerndown is played over unusual limestone-heath terrain shaped by historic designers. Pyle and Kenfig runs through tall dunes, hollows and natural sandy undulations. Machynys is a modern links-style course opened in 2005; Wales Golf named it Welsh Golf Club of the Year for 2026. Pennard, founded in 1896, is known for a rolling links landscape associated with the work of James Braid and C. K. Cotton.
The qualifiers are not four separate major championships. They provide routes into the same Senior Open, whose main competition will be held at Royal Porthcawl from 22 to 25 July.
What it means for Welsh clubs
By spreading qualifying across Bridgend, Llanelli and the Gower Peninsula, the championship will involve a wider group of Welsh clubs than the host venue alone. The schedule gives over-50 professionals and organisers a planning framework, while the identities of successful qualifiers will not be known until the 19 July competitions have taken place.
