Japan's Roots Golf opened pre-orders for THE ROOTS ZERO 3W and 5W fairway woods and 3U and 4U utility/hybrid clubs on 9 October 2026. Retail availability is planned for November, but no exact date has been confirmed. Adjustable hosels and interchangeable weights are not new to the wider equipment market. Their arrival in this family, and the potential implications for club fitting, are the real story.
What the two adjustments mean
According to the manufacturer, the adjustable hosel sleeve changes loft and lie settings within ±1° of their standard values. That range does not establish that both angles can be adjusted independently or that every theoretical combination is available. Golfers should consult the actual setting chart.
A club's static loft is not the ball's launch angle. Delivered loft, face orientation, impact location and turf interaction still influence flight. A setting intended to launch the ball higher cannot by itself promise to remove a slice or add a specific number of yards of carry.
The second adjustment is a replaceable tungsten sole weight. The 3W and 3U come with 11 g weights; the 5W and 4U have 13 g weights. Optional 9, 13, 15 and 17 g versions are sold separately. Changing mass also changes head feel and swingweight. A heavier configuration is not automatically longer or straighter: strike quality and individual tempo may respond differently.
Fairway woods and hybrids address different shots
On the 3W and 5W, Roots Golf highlights a relatively flat sole, a shallow head profile and stated base lofts around 0.5° higher than what it calls conventional numbered woods. There is no single industry-standard loft for a 3-wood or 5-wood, so that comparison is the company's positioning, not a universal benchmark. The design aims to help golfers launch shots directly from the fairway without a tee.
For the 3U and 4U hybrids, Roots Golf describes a low centre of gravity and a higher launch. A higher flight does not automatically ensure a shot will stop on the green: ball speed, backspin and descent angle matter too. A meaningful comparison is with the player's existing hybrid or long iron.
Verified prices and dates
Both 3W and 5W are listed for Japan at ¥72,000 before tax (¥79,200 including tax); the 3U and 4U cost ¥70,000 (¥77,000 including tax). These are Japanese prices, not confirmed overseas retail prices. Pre-orders opened on 9 October and sales are expected in November. Replacement weights are an additional purchase.
How to test the claim
Start in the neutral setting, hit a repeatable series from turf, change only one variable and compare carry, launch angle, spin, dispersion and strike quality. For a 3W, shots from a tee and from the fairway should be evaluated separately. Swapping weights changes swingweight, which must be accounted for when interpreting results.
The release supplies design specifications but no independent, like-for-like trial proving superior distance or accuracy versus competing clubs. The adjustments, model lineup, prices and planned sales window are confirmed; a performance advantage remains to be demonstrated.
