Sanghun Shin's military-service comeback reaches Genesis Championship top three
After nearly two years out for military service, the Korean climbed back through the KPGA Tour and reached ten under, tied third, at the Genesis Championship after 54 holes.

South Korea's Sanghun Shin (Shin Sang-hun) has turned a near-two-year absence from professional competition into one of the more compelling comeback stories of the 2026 golf season. Back after completing military service, the 27-year-old reached ten under par through three rounds of the Genesis Championship in Cheonan, sharing third place and sitting only three shots behind leader Yuto Katsuragawa.
The standings after 54 holes. Shin signed for rounds of 66, 69 and 68 at the par-71 Woo Jeong Hills Country Club, taking him to 203 strokes, ten under. According to the DP World Tour's October 24 report, he shared third with fellow South Korean Si Woo Kim and France's Antoine Rozner. Katsuragawa led on 13 under after matching the course record with a 63 on Saturday; Casey Jarvis was second on 11 under. Those were the positions before Sunday's final round, not the final tournament results.
A return with an unusually long interruption. Shin did not compete in an official event between the end of 2023 and the start of 2026 while serving in the military. That pause followed two significant domestic victories: the 2022 KPGA Championship and the LG Signature Players Championship in 2023, the latter secured in a play-off. When he resumed competition at the New Zealand Open in March 2026, he finished tied for 32nd — a respectable restart, but far from an instant return to winning.
Rebuilding his competitive rhythm. Shin finished tied fourth in his third event back and third two starts later. He collected further top-ten results before capturing September's GolfZon Open in a play-off for his third KPGA title. A runner-up finish at the preceding week's Charity Classic underlined his momentum. By the time Genesis Championship began, he topped the KPGA Tour Order of Merit, evidence that the resurgence was developing across several months rather than a single fortunate round.
A strong opening at Woo Jeong Hills. His first-round 66 left him one behind early leader Casey Jarvis. An unlikely hole-out from a greenside bunker at the very first hole provided an immediate highlight. Speaking to the DP World Tour through a translator, Shin credited his familiarity with the course, short-game execution and putting for the comfortable start. A second-round 69 kept him in contention heading into the weekend.
Saturday's near-ace. Shin followed with a 68 in round three, keeping him within reach of the lead. On the par-three 16th, his tee shot came agonisingly close to a hole-in-one; the DP World Tour published an official clip of the near miss on October 24. Crucially, it was not an ace. The shot nonetheless illustrated his confident ball-striking after a long stretch away from tournament golf.
Why the week matters. Played from October 22–25 in South Korea, the Genesis Championship closes the DP World Tour's regular season before its play-offs. It is only Shin's second start on that circuit, making a strong result potentially significant for his wider international ambitions. The final 18 holes still had to be played at the point covered here; neither a win nor a final finishing position should be inferred.
There is more to Shin's comeback than the scoreboard. His recent record shows a steady rebuilding of form following military duty, from a cautious New Zealand return to domestic wins and a place among established international players. Whether that becomes a lasting breakthrough will depend on the finish in Korea and what follows.
