Ryan Fox arrived at the 2026 Genesis Championship in South Korea not as a player trying to establish his credentials, but as The Open champion hoping to challenge for the Race to Dubai. Speaking to the DP World Tour before the tournament on October 21, the New Zealander explained why a missed cut in India had not damaged his confidence, how he was balancing a global schedule, and what he expected from Woo Jeong Hills Country Club.

At the time of the interview, Fox was sixth in the Race to Dubai standings, with Eugenio Chacarra leading after a strong run of results. Fox acknowledged that catching the Spaniard would be difficult: even a win in Korea, the final regular-season stop, could move him only as high as fourth before the Play-Offs. Still, the July Open Championship winner was not approaching the final stretch as a ceremonial victory lap. His ambitions also had precedent: he finished runner-up in the European season-long race in 2022.

Perhaps the most revealing part of Fox's comments concerned the gap between a result and the underlying quality of golf. He had missed the cut at the previous event in India, but did not believe his swing had suddenly deserted him. The first round brought too many drives into the rough. In the second, he missed just one fairway and felt noticeably better about his ball striking. Putting on grainy greens had presented a separate challenge. His assessment was that a poor tournament finish had hidden some genuine improvement. The lesson is useful beyond professional golf: a scorecard does not always tell the whole story about current form.

Korea offered a different kind of test. Fox had played in the country early in his professional career but was returning after more than a decade. He believed the greens would feel more familiar, resembling surfaces on which he had grown up. At Woo Jeong Hills, though, substantial elevation changes complicate club selection, while cool conditions can make an already long course play longer. With relatively little severe rough, he expected driving distance to be an asset. Yet the slopes around the greens meant the location of an approach shot could be just as important as its quality of contact.

That distinction carries a practical insight for ordinary golfers. Extra distance helps only if it produces a manageable next shot. Uphill and downhill targets can require a club different from what the yardage alone suggests; an approach to the wrong side of a sloping green can create a much harder putt than a longer one left in the right position. Fox's comments pointed toward course management rather than swing mechanics alone.

The interview also offered a glimpse of the life of a 39-year-old major champion with commitments on both the PGA Tour and DP World Tour. America had been his main scheduling focus in recent years, but his major breakthrough gave him more freedom to play around the world. He was enjoying taking the Claret Jug with him, too. Returning to South Korea was therefore both a competitive assignment and a chance to reconnect with a tour he had known earlier in his career.
