Rory McIlroy created true drama at the finish of the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai. His 16-foot eagle putt on the final hole allowed him to enter the playoff, but ultimately he was defeated by Matt Fitzpatrick. Nonetheless, McIlroy claimed victory in the season's overall standings, securing his seventh Race to Dubai title. This achievement allowed him to surpass Seve Ballesteros and get closer to Colin Montgomerie's record.

Fitzpatrick, who started the final round just a step behind the leader, showcased excellent play, making three birdies on the first five holes and finishing the round with a score of 66. His total score was 18 under par, which led him to his third victory in the DP World Tour Championship and the first since 2023.

McIlroy, despite finishing second, expressed hope for the future. He reminded that he was the first European to win a career Grand Slam, and noted his aspiration to become the most successful European in terms of victories in the Order of Merits and seasonal races. McIlroy added that he hopes for a few good years ahead to catch up and surpass Monty.

The DP World Tour season is over, but the break will last only a week. The next season starts in Australia on November 27.
