Nigeria’s Faldo Junior Tour debut produces four winners in Lagos
On 18 October 2026, the inaugural Faldo GolfView Junior Golf Championship concluded at Ikeja Golf Club, Lagos, Nigeria, after three days of competition beginning on 16 October. Joshua John, representing TYB International Golf Resort and Country Club, was named overall winner and took the boys’ under-21 title with rounds of 72, 71 and 76: 219 strokes over 54 holes, 12 over par.
The result matters beyond one club. In August, the Faldo Series formally announced its Junior Tour’s arrival in Nigeria, presenting the event as a pathway for emerging players to experience structured competition. John’s player profile in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) records a first-place finish in the Faldo GolfView event in week 42 of 2026, independently corroborating the winning result.
The host club’s challenge
Oluwatosin Usman of host Ikeja Golf Club finished second in the boys’ under-21 division at 228 (+21), with scores of 76, 73 and 79. He made an eagle on the final hole, drawing an enthusiastic response from the home crowd, but John’s nine-stroke advantage held firm.
In the girls’ under-21 division, Christy Obomanu from SBA Golf Club, Port Harcourt, prevailed with 262 (91–81–90, +55). Beatrice Onoja of Lamingo Golf Club, Jos, was runner-up on 264 (+57). Obomanu, aged 19, is also a student at a sports university in Delta State — a reminder that junior golf development reaches well beyond the country’s main golfing centres.
Under-16: a closing 67 and a comeback
Lewis Ikeji Dandyson of Sealord Golf Club, Port Harcourt, won the boys’ under-16 division with 222 (+15). His scores of 80, 75 and 67 included a final-day two-under-par 67, the standout single round in the junior categories reported by the local press. Mathew Ayi, of NIPSS Golf Club near Jos, followed on 232.
The girls’ under-16 title went to Josephine Benjamin of IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja, whose rounds improved from 93 to 84 to 79, producing 256 (+49) and a last-round turnaround. Fellow Abuja golfer Omowonuola Olarenwaju had led earlier but finished second with 260 (+53); local reporting noted an out-of-bounds error as part of the decisive change.
A bridge from regional clubs to international experience
The event brought together Faldo Series, Ikeja Golf Club and GolfView Suites & Conference Centre. The local organising effort was led by Emy Ekong, formerly responsible for youth development at the Nigeria Golf Federation. Lami Onayi Ahmed, president of the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN), publicly backed broader grassroots investment; club captain Segun Odunuga reiterated Ikeja’s support for junior events.
Sponsor Gabriel Olowo said the winners would be given places to represent Nigeria at a Faldo junior event in Saudi Arabia in April 2027. That is an organiser’s stated plan, not an independently verified final entry list. What is clear already is the national spread of the winners and runners-up — from Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and Jos — and a new competitive platform connecting those local programmes to the wider junior golf circuit.
