October 30, 2026 — Vallarta, Mexico. Nick Hardy closed his second round at the VidantaWorld Mexico Open with a birdie. A putt from a little over nine feet helped the American make the cut at 4 under overall. Behind that one shot was a season shaped by more than leaderboard positions.
Four missed cuts by a single stroke
In his official post-round interview, Hardy said that before the Bermuda event he had missed four successive cuts, each by one stroke. In Mexico the margin was tight again. He had missed a much shorter birdie putt on the previous hole, then faced a tricky read on his last green. The slope near the hole and the direction of the grain complicated the decision; he chose the right side and holed it.
Nor had the two par-5s late in the round offered easy scoring. Hardy said he played driver and fairway wood into both but could not reach either green in two. The birdie on the closing hole therefore carried particular weight.
Why start number 15 mattered
Hardy entered the field on Wednesday after a place opened up. He explained that playing this tournament was important because of the vesting requirements of the PGA TOUR retirement program. With limited playing status, reaching 15 starts in the season was a significant personal goal. He did not disclose any future payment amount, and his comments should not be read as confirmation of a specific pension entitlement.
The work beyond swing mechanics
The golfer also spoke about the gap between working on the physical side of the game and developing the emotional tools needed to compete. Over the past four years, he said, anxiety and stress had increasingly affected him, particularly when a livelihood and a family were at stake. These are Hardy's descriptions of his own experience, not a medical assessment.
His approach now is to keep the atmosphere lighter and to be less punishing toward himself when individual shots go wrong. Making the cut did not solve his wider challenge of rebuilding playing status. But after a run of narrow misses, it represented a meaningful change: this time the decisive putt dropped.
