On 29 October 2026, local reporting in the Blenheim Sun / Otago Daily Times unveiled plans for Caythorpe Green, a golf and leisure development at the Caythorpe Family Estate near Blenheim, in New Zealand’s Marlborough region. The proposal combines practice facilities, hospitality and a vineyard setting. It is a planned project, not an opened golf course.
What is actually proposed?
An industry report published on 2 November describes a roughly 10-hectare site by New Renwick Road. Plans call for a 22-bay driving range, comprising 12 covered practice bays with shot-tracking technology and 10 semi-outdoor bays. There would also be three indoor simulators, two specialist club-fitting studios, coaching space, a golf shop and a bar-bistro.
A separate attraction is an 18-hole mini-golf layout, intended to evoke the design of a small conventional course. This distinction matters: 18 holes of mini-golf do not amount to a regulation 18-hole championship golf course. No full-scale new 18-hole course is identified among the announced facilities.
A fifth-generation family venture
Brothers Simon and Scott Bishell own the land. Their family’s farming history in Marlborough dates to 1880, and the estate later developed horticulture, vineyards and wine activities. In the original local coverage, Simon explained that the family wanted another reason for visitors to come to the estate and identified a gap in dedicated driving-range facilities around Marlborough.
The development is being undertaken with Heller Golf. Its chief executive, Dave Saunders, described a concept intended to serve experienced golfers, newcomers and families. Marlborough mayor Nadine Taylor welcomed the potential tourism benefits, including activity outside the summer peak. Her endorsement should not be mistaken for evidence that every planning consent has been granted.
Consent and opening timetable
A separate local report dated 30 October says the development is intended to open in stages, with full completion targeted for the first quarter of 2028. An industry account says a resource-consent application was lodged, but no independently verified planning approval or start of construction has been established. The number of bays, visitor arrangements and timetable remain proposals, not an operational offering. Public pricing and confirmed opening dates have not been announced.
