Spanish Bay targets 17 April 2027 reopening after major course transformation

California's The Links at Spanish Bay remains closed for renovations. The operator now lists 17 April 2027 as the scheduled reopening date, with Gil Hanse's team reshaping the course and upgrading irrigation and drainage.

A specific reopening date — but the work is still underway

The Links at Spanish Bay, on California's Monterey Peninsula and part of Pebble Beach Resorts, now has a specific scheduled return to play. As of 1 November 2026, the resort's official course page states that Spanish Bay is set to reopen on 17 April 2027.

That is a target date, not a completed reopening. The course remains under transformation, and construction schedules can change. Golfers should not treat the listed date as confirmation that every element of the project has already passed final inspection.

A redesign rather than a routine refresh

Construction began on 18 March 2026. Pebble Beach describes a roughly 13-month transformation led by architect Gil Hanse and his team, with Jim Wagner also involved in the design work.

The aim is to strengthen the strategic interest and playability of an established coastal links-style course. That means considering how players approach holes, choose routes and respond to the property's dunes and contours, rather than merely changing the appearance of a few greens or bunkers.

The resort says the finished course is intended to work for a wider range of everyday golfers while still offering a demanding examination for elite players. These are design objectives; their success cannot be independently judged until the revised holes are actually in play.

The infrastructure beneath the fairways matters

The official project description specifically includes a replacement irrigation system and the realignment and repair of existing stormwater drainage. These are substantial investments in the course's long-term maintenance, not simply visible architecture.

Pebble Beach also names environmental sustainability as a goal. It has not established a measured post-project water-saving result on the official course page, so no percentage reduction should be treated as an outcome already achieved.

What visitors should know

Spanish Bay first opened in 1987 and occupies a Pacific-facing setting with dunes and coastal vegetation. Hanse's project seeks to make better use of that distinctive site alongside better-known neighbouring courses Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill. It is not an announcement that Spanish Bay has already reached a particular ranking.

For anyone planning a 2027 golf trip, the practical distinction is straightforward: 17 April 2027 is the currently listed reopening date, while actual availability and reservations should be checked directly with Pebble Beach Resorts.
