31 October 2026. Scottish professional Marc Warren has challenged the idea that former LIV Golf players should receive special access to the DP World Tour simply because they want to return. His comments appeared in an interview with The Scotsman on 30 October, updated on the morning of the 31st. They are the views of a tour member, not a new eligibility ruling by the DP World Tour.

Why the argument matters at Mallorca

Warren has won four times on the European Tour/DP World Tour and made more than 500 starts. Having spent three years trying to regain regular status, he is competing in the HotelPlanner Tour Grand Final at Club de Golf Alcanada. The 2026 season finale brings together 45 players, with 15 DP World Tour cards for 2027 awarded through the final Road to Mallorca rankings. For players who spent the season earning their opportunities through scores, discretionary access for well-known names raises a practical question about available starts.

The discussion follows Sergio Garcia and other former LIV players expressing an intention to compete again in Europe. Warren objected particularly to descriptions of their return as “coming home.” In his judgment, some had distanced themselves from the circuit when leaving. He acknowledged the financial attraction that prompted their original decisions but argued that it does not now entitle them to exceptional treatment.

Three voices, three emphases

Warren wants returning players to use established qualifying routes where their status requires it. He points to the men fighting for places in Mallorca and those preparing for Q-School: their effort should not be bypassed merely by name recognition.

David Horsey, another four-time winner, also stresses earning a place. Yet he acknowledges a commercial dilemma for management. Recognisable players strengthen fields and can draw sponsors and audiences; retaining that appeal while protecting existing members is a difficult balancing act.

Matthew Southgate takes a more conciliatory view. He argues that experienced names such as Lee Westwood, Henrik Stenson and Graeme McDowell have contributed considerably to the tour's history. Even so, he agrees that merit and the effects of invitations on other players must remain central.

What has — and has not — been decided

These interviews do not establish that the DP World Tour has approved a special membership category, a blanket exemption or a guaranteed number of starts for any named former LIV golfer. Such claims would need direct confirmation from the governing organisation. The 15 Road to Mallorca promotion cards should not be confused with discretionary invitations into individual tournament fields: they are different systems.

GOLFTWITT perspective

This is more than a personal disagreement. Warren speaks for the consequences felt by players in the qualification system; Horsey highlights economic survival; Southgate points to past service and sporting legacy. Future decisions will be judged by whether the tour publishes clear eligibility criteria and explains any impact on players who earned their status through competition.
