From Japan's money-list champion to Abu Dhabi
Japan's Kota Kaneko is approaching an important milestone in his first full DP World Tour season: a debut in the Race to Dubai Play-Offs. An official tour feature published on 26 October 2026 confirms that he will compete in the Abu Dhabi Aldar Championship, 5–8 November, at Yas Links in the United Arab Emirates.
Just a year ago, Kaneko's main stage was the Japan Golf Tour. He won twice in 2025 and finished top of the JGTO money list, which earned him membership of the DP World Tour in 2026. The formal pathway, introduced ahead of the 2023 season, provides access to the international circuit for three leading players from Japan's domestic tour each year.
A dramatic turnaround in Austria
The opening weeks of Kaneko's European campaign were hardly perfect. He missed the cut in each of his first two events. But his form subsequently improved, culminating in a tie for second at the Soudal Open in Belgium. One week later, on 31 May, he won the Austrian Alpine Open in Kitzbühel.
That result delivered Kaneko's first DP World Tour title in only his 12th start on the circuit. It also secured exempt playing privileges through the end of 2028. The Abu Dhabi start, therefore, is not a desperate last chance to retain his membership. It is an opportunity to test his progress against the strongest competitors from the season.
The first Play-Off is assured — Dubai is not
The Race to Dubai season finale features two Rolex Series events. The top 70 available players in the standings compete at Yas Links over 72 holes. Following that tournament, only the top 50 in the season-long ranking qualify for the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai on 12–15 November.
Kaneko's place in Abu Dhabi is confirmed, but his appearance in Dubai is not guaranteed. His opening Play-Off result will help determine whether he makes the final field.
The wider Japanese success story provides important context. In its 26 October review, the DP World Tour highlighted five Japanese players who won on the circuit over the previous four years: Ryo Hisatsune, Rikuya Hoshino, Keita Nakajima, Yuto Katsuragawa and Kaneko. Three reached the tour through the JGTO pathway.
For Kaneko, the next challenge is to turn a breakthrough first international title into a competitive performance on one of the season's biggest stages.
