26 October 2026 brought an unusually compressed route into the Vantelin Tokai Classic on the Japan Golf Tour. Poor weather forced Monday qualifying to be reduced to nine holes, rather than a full round. With 105 players chasing only ten places, officials awarded five spots to the best performers starting on the front nine and five to those beginning on the back nine.

A four-under statement from Keigo Kaneoka

Professional Keigo Kaneoka led the front-nine contingent at four under par. The Hiroshima native has been a professional since 2020, and this qualifying success matters beyond a single round: according to the JGTO, inflammation around his left wrist disrupted his previous season and led to special tour status protection for injury.

Kaneoka said a consistent playing rhythm was his biggest priority during the shortened test. He reported encouraging form both with his full shots and putter. His immediate target at the main event is to make the cut; should he achieve that, he hopes to contend over the weekend. Nine holes have given him an opportunity, not a guaranteed result.

Yamato Hatta makes rain an advantage

On the opposite starting nine, Yamato Hatta claimed the leading qualifying spot with three under par. From Mie Prefecture, Hatta said he feels comfortable competing in rain. He also acknowledged that a nine-hole shootout introduces more unpredictability than a full round. Having secured entry, his ambition is to reward local support with a high finish.

Ten qualifiers and a family first

Three of the ten qualifiers were amateurs. One was college student Reo Matsuyama, whose two-under-par round earned the fifth and final front-nine qualifying spot. His younger brother Mao Matsuyama, a high-school student, already had a sponsor invitation. The brothers are therefore set to appear in the same professional event for the first time, with Reo looking forward to competing for low-amateur honours.

The Vantelin Tokai Classic runs from 29 October to 1 November on Miyoshi Country Club's West Course in Aichi Prefecture. Monday qualifying took place on the neighbouring East Course. The weather changed the qualification rules for the day, but the ten successful players now have the same chance to prove themselves in the championship field.
