Updated 30 October after the PGA TOUR's official first-round report. This article was initially published while Kensei Hirata had completed a 63 (−8) and the late starters were still on the course. Karl Vilips of Australia subsequently shot 62 (−9) at par-71 Vidanta Vallarta to take the opening-day lead at the 2026 VidantaWorld Mexico Open. Hirata is one shot back on 63 (−8). Ben Griffin, Marco Penge, Garrick Higgo and Jeffrey Kang returned 64 (−7). These are opening-round results, not the final outcome of the four-round event, which runs through 1 November.

How Vilips changed the leaderboard

The 25-year-old Australian played in the later wave and built his round around two extraordinary runs. According to the PGA TOUR's official report, he made five consecutive birdies at Nos. 11–15 and four consecutive birdies to close. One further birdie and a bogey between those runs give him ten birdies and one bogey overall: nine under par. His 62 therefore overtook Hirata's early 63 rather than merely matching it.

Vilips highlighted his driver after the round. The competition used lift, clean and place conditions, making fairway accuracy particularly valuable, although that local provision alone does not explain his performance. His approach play and putting also converted opportunities into an exceptional score.

Hirata remains firmly in contention

Hirata's 63 is still one of the day's best rounds. On the par-5 third, he struck a 7-wood approach and holed an eagle putt from approximately 20 feet; the PGA TOUR also reported other long birdie putts. But the crucial distinction after the afternoon wave is that Hirata trails by a stroke rather than leading.

Their season context sharpens the stakes. Vilips entered the week 141st in the FedExCup Fall standings, Hirata 170th, and Penge 112th. Vilips won the 2025 Puerto Rico Open, earning PGA TOUR exemption through next season, but improving his points position still matters. Hirata needs strong finishes to improve his prospects for next year. Neither a Thursday position nor a projected ranking constitutes a guaranteed 2027 playing status.

A redesigned Vidanta Vallarta

The layout was extensively modified for the event's return. It now measures 7,337 yards, par 71. The fourth hole became a 423-yard par 4 rather than the previous 520-yard hole; No. 13 is now a potentially drivable par 4. Those changes alter risk-and-reward choices and limit simplistic comparisons with past editions.

The Mexico Open is the fifth of eight FedExCup Fall events, with a $6 million purse and 500 FedExCup points for the winner. Defending champion Brian Campbell opened with 67, reigning U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark with 69, and John Daly II with 70.

What matters next

The next meaningful checkpoints are the second round and the 36-hole cut. Neither Vilips nor Hirata has won the event. Scores must be verified against the official PGA TOUR leaderboard; the opening-day narrative is documented in the PGA TOUR's official recap.
