California Golf Club Reduces Irrigation Costs Thanks to Innovations
Italian scientist Matteo Serena helped the California golf club Los Serranos reduce irrigation costs with an innovative approach. This inspired other clubs to adopt similar measures, which is especially important amid drought conditions in California.
Italian scientist Matteo Serena, working in Southern California, has made a significant breakthrough in water conservation on golf courses. In his role as Senior Manager of Research and Irrigation Services for USGA, he implemented a methodology that allowed the Los Serranos Golf Club in Chino Hills to significantly cut irrigation costs.
Serena, with extensive research experience, focused on optimizing irrigation systems. During his work, he applied the Catch Can test, which determines the uniformity of water distribution on the course. Initial results showed that watering efficiency was below standard, necessitating system upgrades.
After implementing Serena's recommendations and upgrading the equipment, the club achieved substantial savings. Instead of a complete system overhaul that would have cost millions, Los Serranos invested about $25,000 in new equipment, improving water usage efficiency.
This example has inspired other golf clubs to take similar steps, which is particularly relevant given the drought conditions and limited water resources in California.
