John Catlin, Anirban Lahiri, Thomas Pieters and Caleb Surratt finished the Link Hong Kong Open’s third round tied at 14 under. Sunday will settle the leaderboard tie: nobody holds an advantage with 18 holes remaining.
The biggest change is the disappearance of Matthew Cheung’s cushion. The Hong Kong player completed a bogey-free 62 on Friday and moved three shots clear of his nearest challenger. That was a commanding position at his home tournament, but Saturday reshaped the contest rather than preserving the overnight order.
The completed third-round standings place Cheung and Kalle Samooja at 12 under, two behind the leaders. The Finn shot 63. Surratt returned 67 and Lahiri 66, while Catlin and Pieters each recorded 65. All four leaders have taken 196 strokes across the opening three rounds.
Pieters built his move after an early setback: the Belgian bogeyed the second hole before making six birdies. That sequence is more revealing than the word “leader”: an early loss did not prevent his recovery, while the crowded standings leave little room for simply defending a comfortable margin.
Winning carries significance beyond this tournament. An Augusta National and R&A announcement published by the Asian Tour in September confirmed that the champion will receive an invitation to the 2027 Masters. The pathway continues for a second consecutive year; last year’s winner and beneficiary was Tom McKibbin.
The Open place has different wording. The R&A has allocated one spot at St Andrews in 2027 to the highest finisher who makes the cut and is not already exempt. The title contest and major qualification overlap, but are not necessarily the same race.
Watch Fanling’s closing hole. The official course guide describes a 410-yard par four with a narrow fairway, an approach across water and bunkers around the green. With a tie at the top, watch not just the birdies but the cost of a misplaced approach.
