A birdie at the last settles the NSW Senior Open

Jason Norris won the 2026 NSW Senior Open at Thurgoona Country Club Resort, New South Wales, Australia, on November 1. His three-round total was 203 strokes (13 under par), with rounds of 65, 68 and 70. David McKenzie finished just one stroke back on 204 (12 under), shooting 70, 67 and 67. Norris needed a birdie at the 18th to secure victory; the title was not decided before the last hole.

The result also carries a historical distinction. At 54, Norris became the first golfer to win both the NSW Open and the NSW Senior Open. He had won the state's open championship back in 2007, a 19-year gap that puts this result in the context of a career spanning different stages of professional golf.

How a four-stroke advantage vanished

Norris began with a seven-under 65, making nine birdies in that opening round. Nine birdies do not by themselves mean nine under par: strokes lost elsewhere in the round explain the final score. A second-round 68 (four under) moved him to 11 under and left him four shots ahead going into the 54-hole event's final day.

Sunday was much closer than that cushion suggested. Norris still led by three around the seventh, but drove out of bounds on the ninth and made double bogey. Another bogey at the 12th brought McKenzie level. The 2024 champion had closed the gap with a five-under 67, but could not convert several opportunities to take outright control.

Norris steadied himself on the difficult par-3 16th, striking his tee shot to about one metre. McKenzie answered with a birdie at the 17th, leaving the pair tied heading to the 18th. From approximately 129 metres, Norris hit his approach to about six metres and holed the birdie putt. That was enough for a one-shot victory, with no playoff required.

A different ending from 2022

Four years earlier, Norris had also reached Thurgoona's final hole with a genuine chance to win. A triple bogey in 2022 ended that opportunity. This time he turned the decisive moment into a birdie. Afterwards, he spoke emotionally about the serious illness of his mother, Lynn, and the encouragement he drew from thinking of her. Golf NSW's account makes the personal dimension clear without changing what the official scoring shows.

Matthew Millar took third with 208 (eight under), followed by Murray Lott at 209 (seven under). Brendan Jones and Mathew Goggin shared fifth on 211 (five under). Chris Campbell was the leading amateur, finishing on 213 (three under).

Why the victory matters

The NSW Senior Open is a PGA Legends Tour championship contested over 54 holes of stroke play. Its 2026 purse was A$150,000. There were only three rounds rather than four to separate the leading players, and Norris's experience showed how quickly an apparent cushion can disappear under final-day pressure.

Norris's unique NSW Open–NSW Senior Open double connects his 2007 achievement with another state title nearly two decades later. The finish at Thurgoona was ultimately decided by a precise approach and one successful putt under pressure—not by predictions made with holes still to play.
