Inaugural season titles go to Dooks and Galway
Golf Ireland announced on 27 October 2026 that Tracy Eakin of Dooks Golf Club, County Kerry, and Joe Lyons of Galway Golf Club had won the inaugural Whirlpool Irish Senior Women's and Men's Orders of Merit, respectively. The honours reward performance over a season rather than the result of one tournament.
Joe Lyons: 985 points and a historic championship set
Lyons finished the men's standings on 985 ranking points, 231 ahead of Gary Cullen of Malahide. He won two major senior stroke-play events by a single shot each: first the Irish Senior Men's Amateur Open at Castlerock, then the Irish Senior Men's Amateur Close at Dún Laoghaire. Together those two wins yielded 750 ranking points.
His results also included a semi-final appearance in the Irish Senior Men's Close Match Play and a share of 12th at the Leinster Senior Men's Amateur Open. Golf Ireland singled out the historical dimension of his season: Lyons became the first golfer to complete the set of three Irish senior men's championship titles. He had already won the Senior Men's Amateur Close Match Play in 2023 and 2024, before adding the Open and Close stroke-play titles in 2026. It would be incorrect to suggest he won all three different championships in 2026.
Tracy Eakin: a decisive August match
Eakin claimed the women's season title by 133 ranking points over Deirdre Smith of County Louth. The pivotal result was her second Irish Senior Women's Close championship. At Enniscorthy in August, she defeated fellow Irish international Smith 3&2 in the final.
In match play, 3&2 means that a player led by three holes with only two left to play, ending the match; it is not a three-stroke winning margin or an aggregate score of 3–2.
Eakin's season also included a tie for fourth at the Irish Senior Women's Amateur Open and a top-25 finish at the South of Ireland Women's Amateur Open. She had reached the top of the rankings on 226 points before her Senior Close victory. That figure is an intermediate position, not her stated final total.
A season-long measure of Irish senior golf
The new Orders of Merit combine performances from several championships. They distinguish consistency across a calendar from a single standout win, while recognising both stroke play and match play contributions. Lyons' and Eakin's successes also highlight the strength of club golf outside the professional tours.
Both winners are attached to clubs in the Republic of Ireland — Dooks in Kerry and Galway in Galway. Golf Ireland governs the sport across the whole island, but the winners' club locations should not be confused with Northern Ireland.
