One venue, two Ontario amateur championships
Golf Ontario announced on 28 October 2026 that Wildfire Golf Club, near Lakefield in Ontario's Kawarthas region, Canada, will host two future provincial championships: the 106th Ontario Men's Amateur Championship in 2028 and the 95th Ontario Junior Girls' Amateur Championship in 2030. This is a confirmed host-site announcement, not the result of a tournament that has already taken place.
The assignments connect two distinct parts of Ontario's competitive pathway. The men's event brings together leading amateur golfers from across the province; the junior girls' championship gives emerging female players the opportunity to compete at provincial level. The announcements do not establish precise competition dates, eligibility or qualifying details, or player fields for either year.
A familiar championship venue in the Kawarthas
Wildfire is a private 18-hole club on Stoney Lake, in the Kawarthas near Lakefield. Its course was designed by Canadian architect Tom McBroom and opened in August 2003. Forested terrain, exposed granite and elevation changes shape the playing environment. Golf Ontario reported that Wildfire ranked No. 77 in the 2026 SCOREGolf Top 100 Courses in Canada.
The venue already has substantial tournament experience. It hosted the 2009 Ontario Women's Amateur, 2011 Ontario Men's Mid-Amateur and 2017 Ontario Women's Senior & Mid-Amateur. From 2013 to 2015, Wildfire also staged the Wildfire Invitational on the then PGA TOUR Canada. Those professional events should not be confused with the two newly announced Golf Ontario amateur championships.
What the decision means for players
John Lawrence, Golf Ontario's director of competitions and rules, said the host appointments would showcase both the golf course and its surrounding community. Wildfire general manager Jeff Mills emphasized the course's natural setting and the welcome that the Kawarthas can offer players and families. Head professional Meghan McDougall highlighted the 2030 girls' championship as an opportunity for young women to build competitive experience and confidence.
The important development is the two-year host-site commitment across different categories of the amateur game. Ontario's leading male amateurs are scheduled to visit in 2028, with junior girls following in 2030. Neither championship has taken place; any claims about entrants, scores or winners would be premature.
