A champion returns to a different challenge
American professional Brian Campbell is confirmed for the VidantaWorld Mexico Open at Vidanta Vallarta, Mexico, on 29 October–1 November 2026. He will defend the title he claimed in February 2025, according to the official PGA TOUR player preview and event information.
Last year Campbell posted 20-under-par 264 across rounds of 65, 65, 64 and 70, then beat South Africa's Aldrich Potgieter in a playoff. The dramatic ending included a remarkable bounce off the trees that returned Campbell's ball to the fairway, followed by the short birdie putt that secured his first PGA TOUR trophy. The victory rewarded years of attempts to establish a durable career on the circuit.
Two victories in 2025, a much quieter 2026
Campbell added the 2025 John Deere Classic title later that year. He therefore returns to Mexico as a two-time PGA TOUR winner, a distinction the organisers acknowledge in their tournament preview.
But his recent form looks different. At the time of publication, his official PGA TOUR profile lists no top-10 finishes in the 2026 season and places him 170th in the FedExCup Fall standings. These are a snapshot of his results, not a prediction about his next tournament.
Crucially, a poor ranking does not mean he faces an immediate loss of his playing rights. His 2025 Mexico Open victory earned him a winner's exemption through the end of 2027. This week therefore offers a chance to rediscover competitive momentum and contend for another trophy, rather than a desperate last opportunity to keep his card.
The course he conquered has been modified
His task is also complicated by changes to Vidanta Vallarta's 2026 layout. PGA TOUR describes a 7,337-yard, par-71 course after adjustments to the routing. The fourth hole has been shortened from about 520 to 423 yards, while the thirteenth has become a potentially drivable par 4 instead of a par 3. Other areas of the course have changed as well.
Campbell's experience of the venue remains valuable, but simply copying his 2025 strategy is not an option. Tee-shot club selection, risk management and approach-shot accuracy may all carry different weight on the revised holes. This is an editorial assessment of the official course changes, not a statement attributed to Campbell.
What is at stake
The $6 million event offers 500 FedExCup points to its winner. Since Mexico Open joined the PGA TOUR schedule in 2022, no champion has successfully defended the title in the following edition. Campbell has a chance to break that pattern while changing the direction of a difficult season.
As of 27 October, the tournament has not started. This report confirms Campbell's participation and provides context; it makes no claim about results yet to occur.
