Vidanta Vallarta, Mexico — 1 November 2026. American teenager Blades Brown, 19, finished tied for 19th at 14 under in the VidantaWorld Mexico Open. Having already secured his 2027 PGA TOUR card through the Korn Ferry Tour, he described the week as another chance to identify what needs work before his first full season. PGA TOUR published his post-round comments on 1 November.
Strong from the tee, but a gap around the greens
Brown's tournament numbers revealed an unusual contrast. He led the field in driving accuracy, shared first place in greens in regulation and ranked second in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee. Yet he ranked 39th in Strokes Gained: Around-the-Green and 62nd in Strokes Gained: Putting.
He estimated that his short game had cost him roughly eight shots over the week. That figure was Brown's own assessment, not an independently calculated strokes-gained total. In his reaction after the event, he made clear that shots around the green are a priority for improvement.
A promising round came undone late
Starting the final day tied for ninth, Brown played his first 15 holes in four under par. He then made a bogey at the par-4 16th and a double bogey at the par-3 17th before parring the last. The sequence left him with a closing one-under 70 and 14 under overall, 11 shots behind winner Andrew Novak at 25 under.
The teenager also questioned his course management. He suggested that his more conservative decisions sometimes yield fewer bogeys and more birdies, while pushing too hard can bring the big numbers into play. Those remarks concerned his own experience at Vidanta Vallarta, not a universal prescription for other players.
Preparing for a first full season
Brown has already qualified for the 2027 PGA TOUR through the Korn Ferry Tour standings. According to the tour, he recorded eight top-25 finishes in 12 PGA TOUR starts in 2026. His remaining fall starts therefore offer a chance to refine short-game execution, putting and risk selection without the immediate pressure of earning a card.
Context: these are Brown's new comments after the 1 November final round, not a new announcement about his tour status.
