A bogey-free 64 sets the opening pace

Zach Johnson began the Simmons Bank Championship on October 30, 2026, with a bogey-free 64 (8 under par) at Pleasant Valley Country Club in Little Rock, Arkansas. The 50-year-old American finished the first round of the PGA TOUR Champions event one stroke clear of Henrik Stenson, whose 65 (7 under) put him alone in second.

Defending champion Steven Alker, Michael Block and Richard Green share third after rounds of 66 (6 under). That tightly packed leaderboard makes the distinction between an opening-round lead and a tournament victory essential. The event is contested over 54 holes, with two rounds still to come before the November 1 finish.

A trophy — and the season-long lead — in play

This is the second event of the Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs. Johnson entered the week second in the season points standings, behind Stewart Cink. His 64 moved him into projected first place in the Tour's live points calculations. That projection assumes the present tournament positions become final: it is not a confirmed change of season champion and can shift throughout the weekend.

Johnson has already collected six PGA TOUR Champions victories in 2026, the most of anyone on the circuit this season. A seventh title would equal the Tour's single-season victory record for a rookie aged 50 or older. But a strong Friday is only the opening step toward that benchmark. It does not count as a seventh win.

Why Stenson's 65 matters differently

For Stenson, the central issue is qualification for the season finale. The Swede began the Simmons Bank Championship 41st in points, outside the top 36 who will advance to the concluding Charles Schwab Cup Championship. After his first-round 65 he was projected 20th, a sharp improvement — though one that remains wholly provisional until the final putts on Sunday.

Alker, the defending tournament champion, is just two shots behind Johnson. Cink, who arrived as the season points leader, remains involved in the wider race even though his opening score did not match Johnson's. With playoff points and qualification places at stake, the standings beyond the first two names are central to the story.

What remains undecided

The tournament runs from October 30 to November 1 at Pleasant Valley Country Club, a par-72 venue, with a total purse of $2.3 million. When this second playoff event ends, the field will narrow to 36 players for the Charles Schwab Cup Championship on November 12–15.

These are completed first-round results, not final tournament scores. Johnson has the lead, Stenson has put himself into a stronger qualifying position, and the projected Cup rankings point to a possible reshuffling. None of those projections is settled. The figures and playoff context are checked against PGA TOUR Champions' official October 30 daily wrap-up and tournament information, with independent reporting for context.
