During this year's Ryder Cup at the iconic Bethpage Black course, an unusual situation arose. Viktor Hovland, one of the leading players on the European team, sustained a neck injury. This could lead to the application of a rare Ryder Cup rule known as the "substitution" rule, which allows team captains to pre-select a player to replace someone in a singles match if that player becomes injured.
Hovland was set to participate in a pairings match on Saturday, but due to the worsening of his condition, he was replaced by Tyrrell Hatton. It remains unclear if Hovland will be able to return to play on Sunday. Paul McGinley, an NBC analyst and advisor to the European team, acknowledged that the "substitution" may be possible, expressing hope for assistance from the physiotherapy team in Hovland's recovery.
Interestingly, the "substitution" rule has only been used twice in Ryder Cup history. In 1991, American Steve Pate withdrew due to a rib injury, and he was replaced by David Gilford, whose name had been pre-selected. In 1993, the situation was different: Sam Torrance from the European team was injured, but American Lanny Watkins declined to compete, so the "substitution" remained unused.
In the Saturday morning match, Hovland and partner Robert MacIntyre defeated Americans Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley. However, Viktor admitted that he had to take painkillers on the 7th hole and sought physiotherapy assistance on the 10th. After the match, he emphasized that he does not want to risk exacerbating his condition, recalling how he had to withdraw from the Travelers Championship earlier this year due to a similar issue.
