A comeback decides the women’s competition

The Northern California Golf Association (NCGA) and Northern California PGA (NCPGA) contested three team cups at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach, California, on October 26–27, 2026. NCGA’s amateur women retained the NorCal Women’s Cup, while the NCPGA professional teams prevailed in both men’s competitions, the Hanna-Wehrman and Staedler-Jetter cups.

The women’s competition produced the tightest turnaround. NCPGA professionals led 6.5–5.5 after the opening day, but the NCGA amateurs collected eight of the twelve points available on the final day, compared with four for NCPGA. That reversed the match and delivered a 13.5–10.5 victory for NCGA. These numbers represent team match points, not strokes or scores relative to par.

According to the association’s official report, NCGA has held the women’s cup since 2019. Its overall record against NCPGA now stands at 21 wins, six losses and one tie. NCGA’s eight-player roster included Lynne Cowan, Kelly Wilson, Sherry Zhong, Tina Barker, Renata Young, Catherine Zhu, Karen Garcia and Debbie Robertson. Opposing professionals included Mia Torres, Pat Hurst and Joanne Lee, alongside their NCPGA teammates.

PGA professionals win both men’s cups

In the Hanna-Wehrman Cup, NCPGA edged NCGA 25.5–22.5 over two days, securing a second consecutive win in the series after its 2024 triumph. The amateur association nevertheless retains an all-time series advantage of 28 wins, 21 losses and nine ties.

The Staedler-Jetter Cup was more decisive. NCGA led its opening four-ball session 13.5–10.5, but the NCPGA professionals ultimately won 42–30, their first victory in this cup since 2017. NCGA still leads that historical series 20–10–3.

There were three separate trophies, not one combined championship. Each competition had its own players and match-point total, so the women’s comeback should not be confused with either men’s result.

Understanding four-ball and foursomes

The first day of the Hanna-Wehrman competition featured four-ball and foursomes, two distinct formats under the Rules of Golf. In four-ball, each partner plays a separate ball, and the side uses the lower score on each hole. In foursomes, two partners share one ball and take alternate strokes, including alternating the player who tees off on successive holes. These formats are covered by R&A Rules 23 and 22, respectively.

The women’s opening-day schedule included multiple four-ball segments. Their final result was determined by match points accumulated across two days. It does not reveal any individual competitor’s number of strokes.

Why this matters locally

NCGA represents amateur golfers and member clubs across Northern California; NCPGA is the region’s professional PGA section. Poppy Hills is NCGA’s home course, making the head-to-head cups a showcase for the local club and professional communities. Unlike an individual stroke-play tour event, the emphasis here is on team depth, partnerships, match-play tactics and the history of regional rivalries.

NCGA reported the final results on October 27, 2026.
