Juan Xander Coetzee won South Africa's 2026 Silver Salver Amateur Championship with a four-round total of 274, 14 under par. The Gauteng North Golf Union (GNGU) event took place on 16–18 October at Irene Country Club in Centurion, Gauteng. Playing at his home club, Coetzee finished three strokes clear of Cilliers Craig.
Four rounds across three days
The organising union confirms that the competition was played as a 72-hole stroke-play championship. A cut after 36 holes reduced the field to the leading 65 players, who advanced to the remaining two rounds. This was an important regional amateur event, not a professional Sunshine Tour tournament.
Coetzee set the early pace with an opening 64, eight under par. He followed it with rounds of 71, 68 and 71, producing 64 + 71 + 68 + 71 = 274. Against a four-round par of 288, his final score was −14. This figure represents strokes relative to par, not a count of birdies.
A lead that changed hands
The runner-up was Cilliers Craig of Silver Lakes Golf & Wildlife Estate. Craig scored 70, 64, 75 and 68 for 277 (−11). His superb second-round 64 gave him the halfway lead by one stroke, 134 to 135 over Coetzee.
Round three proved decisive: Coetzee posted 68 while Craig returned 75, turning a one-shot deficit into a six-shot lead after 54 holes. Craig closed with a 68 to narrow the final margin to three, but was unable to catch the host-club player.
Pieter Coetzee finished third according to AmateurGolf.com's published results, with 69, 68, 72 and 70 for 279 (−9).
Why the Silver Salver matters
South Africa's golf landscape extends far beyond professional tour events. Provincial unions such as GNGU provide a competitive setting for accomplished amateurs, while established clubs give players the opportunity to test themselves over demanding multi-round formats. Irene Country Club's role as host and a strong field cut to 65 after two rounds underscore the standard of the event.
For the eventual winner, local familiarity alone did not deliver the trophy. Coetzee had to absorb a change of leader at halfway, take control in round three and protect that advantage over the final 18 holes.
