A new chapter for an Arnold Palmer layout
Rivers Edge Golf Club in Shallotte, North Carolina, has announced a comprehensive green-surface renovation for 2027. The publicly accessible 18-hole course, which opened in 1999 and was designed by Arnold Palmer, will replace its existing putting surfaces with TifEagle Bermudagrass. The club published the project plan, and Club + Resort Business reported the announcement on 26 October 2026.
Dates that matter to visitors
The club identifies 16 May 2027 as the last scheduled day of play and 17 May as the start of its temporary closure. A separate answer on the official project page says renovation work begins on 12 May; that earlier work date should not be confused with the date the course stops accepting rounds. The target reopening is early fall 2027, subject to weather, with no confirmed day yet. Tee times are being offered from October 2027 onwards, but that availability should not be treated as a guarantee that construction will finish on a particular date.
What will actually change?
The centerpiece is a full renovation of the greens and the introduction of TifEagle, a fine-textured Bermudagrass cultivar used for putting surfaces in warm climates. It is a substantial playing-surface intervention rather than routine overseeding or maintenance. The club's announcement also describes irrigation upgrades and replacements. Potential improvements to a restroom station near the 13th hole are still in preliminary discussions with contractors and local officials, so they should not be described as approved construction. Further clubhouse and property improvements are planned, without a finalized schedule for each.
Preserving the character of the design
Rivers Edge follows the winding Shallotte River, salt marshes and tidal creeks. Those natural edges have long shaped the strategic demands of the course, particularly on its distinctive ninth hole, nicknamed “Arnie’s Revenge.” The stated aim of the new investment is to improve turf and facilities while preserving the character of Palmer's layout, rather than replacing the underlying routing with an entirely new design.
The 2027 program follows a series of earlier upgrades, including restoration of bulkheads at holes 9, 15 and 18, bridge and bunker work, improved practice facilities, renovated cart paths and clubhouse improvements. The distinction between operational closure and construction schedule matters to visiting golfers: the property remains a public-play golf destination, and summer 2027 itineraries must account for its temporary closure.
