30 October 2026 — Comporta, Portugal. Scottish professional Scott Drummond produced nine consecutive birdies, from the sixth to the fourteenth hole, in the opening round of the Portugal Legends Championship at Pinheirinho Golf Course. The sequence equalled a recognised record for consecutive birdies in a single round on professional tours; it did not create a previously unseen outright record. Drummond signed for a six-under-par 66, joining Paul Lawrie and Jean Hugo at the top of the first-round leaderboard.
Nine holes, nine birdies
The extraordinary streak began at the sixth, where a sand wedge set up a short birdie putt. On the par-five seventh Drummond chipped his third shot close and continued to create chances with accurate approaches and confident putting. Late in the sequence he reached one green with a 3-wood and 8-iron, and followed with a driver and sand wedge to set up the ninth straight birdie.
The scorecard needs a crucial distinction: nine consecutive birdies did not mean a final score of nine under par. The streak describes holes 6–14 only; after completing all 18, Drummond's total was 66 (−6). It ended on the fifteenth, where he did not make birdie. He said afterwards that he knew other players had reached nine in succession but had not realised it was the record mark.
Shared lead, not an early winner
Drummond won the PGA Championship at Wentworth in 2004 and has enjoyed a long professional career. His opening-round 66 was matched by Paul Lawrie, The Open champion in 1999, and Jean Hugo, who had already won on the Staysure Legends Tour in Beijing earlier in the season. Johan Edfors of Sweden and Mark Brown of New Zealand followed at 67 (−5).
Portugal's only professional representative in the 60-player field, national senior champion Nuno Campino, opened with 75 (+3). These standings are explicitly as of the completion of round one on 30 October, not the eventual tournament result.
A high-profile week in Portugal
Pinheirinho, near Comporta in the municipality of Grândola, Alentejo, is hosting the 30 October–1 November event on the Staysure Legends Tour, the professional senior circuit. The prize fund is €450,000, and the course was designed by Portuguese architect Jorge Santana da Silva.
The record-equalling performance generated immediate international attention for a tournament staged on Portuguese soil. Two rounds remained after Drummond's spectacular opener, so nothing about the streak determined who would ultimately lift the trophy.
