PGA Tour announces first event of overhauled schedule
The PGA Tour has revealed the first details of its ambitious schedule overhaul set to take effect in 2028, announcing that the Travelers Championship will be part of the elite Championship Series.

- Starting in 2028, the Tour plans a complete schedule overhaul, and the first details of this ambitious project have begun to emerge in recent months.
- The key innovation will be the division of the Tour into two tiers: the Championship Series and the Challenger Series.
- The Championship Series will feature the world's best players, while the Challenger Series will offer an opportunity for golfers not ranked in the top 120 to compete for promotion to the elite level the following year.
- Until recently, only the approximate number of tournaments in each series was known, as well as the fact that the four majors, the FedEx Cup playoff events, and The Players Championship would be guaranteed spots in the top tier.
The PGA Tour is gearing up for significant changes that will dramatically reshape professional golf in the near future. Starting in 2028, the Tour plans a complete schedule overhaul, and the first details of this ambitious project have begun to emerge in recent months.
The key innovation will be the division of the Tour into two tiers: the Championship Series and the Challenger Series. The Championship Series will feature the world's best players, while the Challenger Series will offer an opportunity for golfers not ranked in the top 120 to compete for promotion to the elite level the following year.
Until recently, only the approximate number of tournaments in each series was known, as well as the fact that the four majors, the FedEx Cup playoff events, and The Players Championship would be guaranteed spots in the top tier. However, the specific tournaments that would earn elite status remained unknown.
This situation changed on Monday when the PGA Tour officially announced that the Travelers Championship would be one of the first tournaments included in the exclusive Championship Series in 2028.
Travelers Championship First to Join PGA Tour's Championship Series
PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp had previously announced these dramatic changes to the Tour's structure earlier this year, but without revealing many specifics at the time. According to him, the Championship Series will include approximately 23-24 events, featuring around 120 top players. This list, in addition to the aforementioned majors and playoff finals, will also include other prestigious competitions with substantial prize money.
Many tournaments faced the threat of being relegated to the Challenger Series, where players ranked outside the top 120 will compete for a chance to return to the elite. There were also concerns that some tournaments might be completely removed from the PGA Tour calendar.
However, the news of the Travelers Championship's inclusion in the Championship Series marks the first official confirmation of the Tour's plans. This decision comes as no surprise, given the high status and popularity of the tournament held at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut. The annual event consistently attracts a large number of spectators and demonstrates high performance across all metrics.
Brian Rolapp himself highlighted the high level of organization and partnership during a press conference at the 2026 Travelers Championship: "This has been an extremely successful tournament by every metric. Our members love it. Travelers is an amazing partner. We obviously have an affinity for this course. They do a wonderful job. I think they do a lot of things that we’re looking for in a Championship Series event."
The Travelers Championship has held Signature Event status in recent years and will again in June 2027 before officially joining the Championship Series in 2028. This confirms the PGA Tour's commitment to maintaining and strengthening the positions of its most successful and beloved tournaments for players and fans within the new structure.
