In South Central Los Angeles, the eagerly awaited reopening of the renovated Maggie Hathaway Golf Course has taken place. Following extensive reconstruction led by renowned architect Gil Hanse, the course has been accessible to the public since March 28. Notably, the cost of playing a round on this golf course is just $9, making it one of the most affordable golf destinations in the region.

Maggie Hathaway Golf Course is a 12-acre, nine-hole, par-3 course that has served as a vital hub for developing young golfers in South Central Los Angeles since its opening in 1962. The renovation project aimed not only to modernize the infrastructure but also to preserve the inclusive spirit at its core.

The upgrade work included a complete replacement of the drainage and irrigation systems, significantly enhancing the course's quality and sustainability. The total project budget amounted to an impressive $21 million, with approximately half of this sum earmarked for the construction of a new clubhouse in the coming years. Much of the funding came from private donations, and Hanse Golf Course Design provided its services pro bono, allowing the course renovation itself to be completed under budget.

Each of the nine holes at Maggie Hathaway features a unique design inspired by classic and famous golf courses worldwide. Sources of inspiration include the legendary St. Andrews (hole #1), George Thomas's courses such as Riviera and LACC North (hole #2), and architectural templates like Redan (holes #3 and #8) and Double Plateau (hole #4). Design elements from renowned architects like Chandler Egan and A.W. Tillinghast, as well as the famous "Devil’s A**hole" bunker at Pine Valley (hole #9), were also incorporated.

The course is owned and managed by Los Angeles County. Despite concerns regarding the funding for future clubhouse construction and ongoing maintenance, the Maggie Hathaway Golf Course project is recognized as one of the most impressive municipal golf initiatives of the past decade, underscoring the importance of accessible golf for local communities.
