Bergen municipality has allocated NOK 2 million to Fana Golfklubb, south of the Norwegian city, to help advance the planning and regulatory work behind a possible expansion and upgrade of its golf course. Regional newspaper Fanaposten reported the grant on 21 October 2026; Norsk Golf followed up on 27 October. Crucially, this is funding for the planning process, not evidence that construction has begun or that a final course design has been approved.
What the club wants to change
Fana is looking at ways to improve playing conditions and make its facilities more accessible. The proposals also aim to reduce the course's impact on nearby watercourses and water environments. Those objectives mean that any expansion needs more than alterations to fairways, greens or playing routes: the club must address land-use planning and environmental considerations before physical changes can be confirmed.
Fanaposten linked the NOK 2 million allocation to Bergen's revised municipal budget. The local outlet reported that Jan-Inge Klubben, Fana Golfklubb's general manager, described the project as one the club had worked towards for a long time. Norsk Golf subsequently clarified the emphasis on regulatory planning and improvements to the course.
A busy club in a growing golf market
Reidar Digranes, Bergen's municipal councillor responsible for sport, pointed to strong local participation and pressure on available golf capacity. His comments presented the grant as a way for the municipality to work with existing sporting organisations, rather than expecting the city to develop every facility itself.
The club sits approximately 12 kilometres south of central Bergen. Its own website lists more than 2,200 members, putting it among Norway's larger clubs. Fana describes the facility as Bergen's only 18-hole golf course and offers both outdoor practice facilities and indoor simulators.
What remains undecided
The grant amount and its planning purpose have been reported by two separate local and golf-media outlets. No verified final layout, construction timetable or opening date has yet been established in the materials reviewed. The allocation therefore should not be described as a completed expansion or an immediate start to building work.
The development illustrates a broader challenge for Norwegian club golf: creating additional playing capacity while securing planning approvals and protecting the local landscape and waterways.
