Rubén González, representing Gran Coyote, became the inaugural champion of Mexico’s I Campeonato Nacional Amateur Senior on 25 October 2026 at Punta Mita Golf Club in Nayarit. He completed 54 holes in 220 strokes, four over par, finishing four shots clear of two joint runners-up. The Mexican Golf Federation (Federación Mexicana de Golf, FMG) confirmed the result in its official final-round report.
A title decided across three rounds
González opened with 74 (+2), followed it with an even-par 72, and entered the last round on 146 (+2). He was tied at that stage with Colombian amateur Juan Carlos Samper, representing Guaymaral Bogotá. The event therefore remained open going into Sunday’s decisive 18 holes.
González signed for a final 74 (+2). His card included five birdies, five bogeys and one double bogey. Those figures reconcile correctly: the birdies and bogeys cancel out, leaving the two strokes lost on the double bogey. Rounds of 74, 72 and 74 produced his winning 220 (+4) total over a par-72 course. There is no suggestion of a first-place playoff in the federation’s published account; the championship was decided on aggregate stroke play.
An international leaderboard in Nayarit
Ricardo Samar Baruqui, of Las Misiones Club Campestre, and Juan Carlos Samper shared second place at 224 (+8), four shots behind the champion. Samar had held the first-round lead with 71 (−1) but finished the week as joint runner-up.
Canada’s Jason Thorpe and the United States’ John Luoma followed, both on 227 (+11). The event was hosted in Mexico, but the leaderboard had an international character; the nationality of each player should not be confused with the country where the championship was held.
Why the new championship matters
According to the FMG, approximately 50 amateurs took part, representing Mexico, the United States, Canada, the Dominican Republic and Colombia. The new senior amateur event forms part of the federation’s domestic championship calendar and offers points towards the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR). It is an amateur championship, not a professional-tour event.
González received the inaugural trophy and direct entry opportunities for the 2027 National Senior Amateur Championship and the 99th National Amateur Championship. Both remain conditional on satisfying the respective eligibility requirements. The FMG says it intends to hold the event annually and hopes to return to Punta Mita in 2027, although that is a statement of intent rather than a confirmed future schedule.
The result gives the first edition a home winner and establishes a new competitive platform for senior amateurs within Mexico’s national structure.
