Malaysian golfer Liyana Azizan Durisic, 25, opened the Maybank Championship on 29 October 2026 with a five-under-par 67 on Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club's West Course. She was tied for sixth at the conclusion of the opening round and led the Malaysian contingent. The notable feature of her scorecard was not simply five strokes under par but 18 holes without a bogey.

Five birdies, no dropped shots

Durisic made birdies at Nos. 1, 3, 4, 13 and 15, with pars everywhere else. Those five gains account for the entire five-under total; there is no need to infer additional birdies from the score. Bernama's 29 October post-round report recorded the numbers and her own assessment of how the round unfolded.

The value of missing on the correct side

When discussing her play, Durisic pointed to strong ball-striking and the decisions she made about where a less-than-perfect shot could finish. Her point was about managing potential misses rather than chasing an ideal strike every time: leaving the ball in a manageable place can preserve the opportunity to make par. She also credited timely putts. These are observations about one particular round, not a universal promise of lower scores.

Friends who stayed for all 18

Durisic said she initially thought her close friends might head home after nine holes. They stayed through the remainder of the round, giving her a lift as she played in front of a home audience. She spoke about the extra motivation of representing Malaysia as well as herself.

Before the event, she had also discussed having her brother Danial back on the bag as caddie. The fresh story from Thursday, however, was how disciplined decision-making and an engaged crowd helped shape a clean scorecard, rather than a repeat of her pre-tournament preparations.

What happens next

The 29 October–1 November LPGA event still has three rounds to play after Thursday. A bogey-free 67 is a strong platform, but it neither fixes Durisic's finishing position nor predicts Friday's conditions.
