Nine under — without knowing the number
Chinese golfer Liu Yan (listed by the LPGA as Yan Liu) posted a 63 (−9) in round three of the Maybank Championship on 31 October 2026, matching her lowest LPGA Tour round. Yet in her post-round comments published by the LPGA, she explained that she had not kept track of the total: her caddie told her she was nine under only after she reached the scoring area.
Her emphasis had been on the next shot, not her running score. That mindset set the scene for the most dramatic moment of her round.
A full wedge and an eagle on 18
After a less-than-perfect driver swing on the 18th hole, Liu laid up to a preferred yardage. She considered 60-degree and 54-degree wedges for her third shot. Her caddie's encouragement, she said, gave her confidence to choose a club and make a full swing. From the fairway, she holed her third shot for eagle.
It was not a hole-in-one: an eagle completed with the third shot on a par-5 is a hole-out, not an ace from the teeing area.
Liu said she felt comfortable with her swing and putting that day. The LPGA recorded 26 putts, 16 greens in regulation from 18, and six of 14 fairways hit. Together, the numbers help explain her performance without suggesting that one round establishes a guaranteed technical formula.
Two strokes back, one round remaining
After 54 holes, Liu stood at 200 (−16), tied for second with Pauline Roussin-Bouchard. Defending champion Miyu Yamashita led on 198 (−18), leaving the Chinese player two strokes behind heading into Sunday's final round, as shown by the LPGA leaderboard.
Liu joined the LPGA Tour in 2023 and is still pursuing her first win on the main tour. In her comments she emphasized staying in the present and concentrating on each shot rather than predicting the outcome. These are real post-round statements, not a fabricated question-and-answer interview.
