A first appearance with a route to Augusta

The Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship (AAC) opens on October 29 at the South Course of Te Arai Links in New Zealand. For two Korean national-team amateurs, Jeyi Son (손제이) and Minhyeok Yu (유민혁), the championship brings an extraordinary opportunity: its winner earns an invitation to the 2027 Masters Tournament and an exemption into The 155th Open at St Andrews, subject to the applicable amateur-status requirements.

In an interview published by Yonhap on October 28, both first-time AAC competitors spoke of Augusta National as a dream destination and identified winning this week as their ambition. Their comments are a statement of intent, not a result: no competitive rounds had been played when this report was prepared.

Their standing is verified, not inferred

The Korea Golf Association's men's ranking for the week of October 26 places Son first with 3,254.32 ranking points from 18 counted tournaments. Yu is second with 2,435.94 points from 13 events. These are domestic KGA ranking points, not strokes scored and not positions in the World Amateur Golf Ranking.

Son arrives with four amateur titles in 2026: the Imsil N Cheese Cup in April, the Asia-Pacific Junior Championship in Sri Lanka in June, the Songam Cup in August, and September's Heo Jeong-gu Cup, the Korean Amateur Championship. He told Yonhap that changing to a claw putting grip had helped his performance on the greens. The adjustment offers an interesting technical subplot as he encounters the unfamiliar coastal course.

Yu has already challenged professionals

Yu won the Dream Park Amateur Championship in September and finished runner-up at four other domestic events. His most striking professional-tour result came in August at the KPGA Dong-A Membership Group Open, where he competed as an amateur and finished one stroke behind the winner.

He is also weighing a move into the professional game and pursuing the qualifying pathway for the Japan Golf Tour (JGTO). Those plans make the championship's amateur-status requirement more than a formality: the timing of any professional transition may matter if he wins and wishes to take up the major-championship opportunities.

What the next four days will decide

The 72-hole championship runs from October 29 through November 1 on Te Arai Links' par-71 South Course, north of Auckland. It is conducted by the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation, the Masters Tournament and The R&A. The runner-up or tied runners-up also receive a place in Final Qualifying for The Open.

The tournament will test the pair beyond their strong Korean form. Controlling ball flight on a coastal course, choosing sensible approach targets and handling the pace of the greens are potential deciding factors; those are editorial considerations rather than claimed round statistics. As of October 28, the official leaderboard showed no completed championship rounds.
