An Atlantic links produces a dramatic finish

The Irish Intervarsity Championship concluded on 23 October 2026 at Carne Golf Links in County Mayo, Republic of Ireland. Éanna Mulhare of TUS Midwest won the men's individual title by holing an eagle putt on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff. Tournament organiser Golf Ireland confirmed the championship outcome, with separate Irish media reports detailing the final-round turnaround.

This was a national university golf championship, not the professional Irish Open. The event ran 21–23 October at the links near Belmullet. Although Golf Ireland governs golf across the island, the competition took place in the Republic of Ireland, not Northern Ireland; venue, rather than an entrant's nationality, determines its country classification.

A five-stroke lead disappears

The 20-year-old Mulhare followed his opening round with a three-under-par 69, building a four-shot overnight lead before the final day. The Atlantic wind returned for the last round, but he held a five-stroke advantage heading to the 14th over a chasing group that included Sean Cooper of Maynooth University.

Mulhare's grip on the championship weakened late: he bogeyed 15, made a double bogey at 16, and dropped another shot at 17. Cooper, who produced a final-round 70 (−2), was already in the clubhouse at two over par overall. Mulhare needed to par the 18th to match him — and did so.

Both players took five strokes on the first extra hole. At the second, Mulhare reached the green in two and holed the eagle putt to claim his first Irish Intervarsity title. The result was the opposite of a runaway victory: the championship came down to a sudden-death decider after a volatile finish.

Dawson doubles up; Maynooth retains the team prize

Anna Dawson of Maynooth University successfully defended her women's individual title. An opening 81 (+9) left her work to do; she answered with a 66 in round two and 76 on the final day for 223 strokes (+7). She was fifth on the combined leaderboard but first in the separate women's classification. Those standings are not interchangeable.

Maynooth University also retained the team championship, with Conor Stapleton, Lorenzo Fior and James Walsh combining for a 12-over-par total. The team result is distinct from Mulhare's men's win and Dawson's women's individual success.

Why the university result matters

Carne's exposed links conditions made the championship a test of decision-making as much as ball-striking. Mulhare demonstrated the resilience needed to recover from a collapsing advantage; Dawson turned an opening-day setback into another title; and Maynooth again proved the depth of its student golf programme. These are achievements within Irish intervarsity golf, not a professional tour or a global ranking event.
