Iceland’s champions secure a second straight European top-eight finish
Golfklúbbur Reykjavíkur (GR) placed eighth among 23 clubs at the 2026 European Men's Club Trophy, contested on the Châteaux course at Cabot Bordeaux in southwest France from 22 to 24 October. The club represents Iceland; the event itself was held in France, not in Reykjavík.
GR recorded a team aggregate of 440 strokes, 14 over the combined par, across three competition days. Having finished sixth in 2025, the Icelandic club has now reached the European top eight in consecutive years.
The three-player team and its scorecards
The Reykjavík contingent consisted of Böðvar Bragi Pálsson, Jóhann Frank Halldórsson and Arnór Tjörvi Þórsson. Their individual 54-hole totals were:
| Player | Round 1 | Round 2 | Round 3 | Total | To par |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Böðvar Bragi Pálsson | 77 | 70 | 75 | 222 | +9 |
| Jóhann Frank Halldórsson | 75 | 75 | 74 | 224 | +11 |
| Arnór Tjörvi Þórsson | 72 | 74 | 79 | 225 | +12 |
The distinction between individual and team scoring matters here. This was a 54-hole stroke-play competition, with all three golfers completing their own rounds but only the best two scores counting towards the team's aggregate each day. It was not a match-play or foursomes event.
Reykjavík's daily counting scores added up to 147 on Thursday (72 + 75), 144 on Friday (70 + 74) and 149 on Saturday (74 + 75). That produces 440 strokes overall. With two scores per day on a par-71 course, the six counting rounds represent 14 strokes over par.
Denmark wins; Iceland takes eighth
Defending champions Smørum Golfklub of Denmark won at seven under par (−7). Warrenpoint Golf Club of Ireland placed second at +2, while Eindhovensche Golf of the Netherlands took third at +7. Reykjavík finished eighth among the 23 national champion clubs competing.
According to the European Golf Association (EGA), the three days were affected by heavy rain and strong winds, particularly during the second round. The competition took place on the Châteaux course at Cabot Bordeaux, in Le Pian-Médoc near Bordeaux.
From an Icelandic title to the European stage
GR qualified after winning Iceland's first-division men's club championship in August at Strandarvöllur, Hella. The Reykjavík club defeated Golfklúbbur Kópavogs og Garðabæjar (GKG) 5–0 in the final, securing its second consecutive Icelandic club crown and the 27th in its history.
The European Men's Club Trophy is reserved for clubs that have won their national titles; it is a club competition, not a contest between national representative teams. GR's eighth-place finish is consequently a concrete benchmark for Icelandic club-level amateur golf against the continent's strongest domestic champions.
