VÄRMDÖ, SWEDEN — Sweden's Fågelbro Golf & Country Club has finished its first complete season on a comprehensively remodelled championship course. An in-depth report published by Golf Course Architecture on 26 October 2026 details the renovation overseen by architect Johan Benestam, carried out in two phases by contractor Nelson & Vecchio between August 2023 and June 2025. The project sought to solve longstanding turf problems while giving players more meaningful strategic decisions.
Why a rebuild was necessary. Course manager Martin Hall explained that after three decades, the original putting surfaces had become increasingly difficult to maintain to a consistent standard. Low-lying sections suffered recurring ice damage, while the spread of annual bluegrass (Poa annua) complicated spring conditions. The aging construction also fell short of modern expectations for greens exposed to Scandinavian winters. Merely returfing problem areas would not address the underlying performance issues.
The design and engineering changes. Every green and its surrounds were reconstructed, and every bunker was rebuilt with CapillaryFlow technology intended to improve drainage and sand performance. New tees were added; others were shifted or enlarged. Selected landing areas, hole shapes and lakes were adjusted, alongside improvements to the Rain Bird irrigation system. Benestam says the reshaped surrounds now reward consideration of approach angle, bunker placement and risk versus reward. In other words, the course asks more of a golfer than choosing the club needed to carry a particular yardage.
Wider playing options. Fågelbro also introduced forward tees across all 18 holes through a “Tee it Forward” approach, making the course more manageable for golfers with shorter shots while retaining its strategic demands from the back tees. The original layout, designed by Björn Eriksson, dates from 1991. It is an 18-hole, par-71 parkland-and-woodland course close to the Stockholm archipelago coast. The property also features a nine-hole short course and practice facilities.
Keep the chronology straight. All 18 renovated holes reopened on 14 June 2025. The 26 October 2026 coverage is a retrospective on the renovation and its first complete season, not an announcement that the course opened this week.
Can visitors play now? As of 26 October 2026, the club's official homepage states that its 18-hole course and practice putting greens are closed for the winter. The club expects to welcome players back in spring 2027 but has not published a firm reopening date. The short course and driving range are listed as available, subject to local operating and weather conditions. Its published standard 2026 season green fees for the 18-hole course were SEK 1,450 for adults and SEK 550 for juniors; these should not be mistaken for live availability while the main course is closed. Guest play is allowed during the operating season subject to booking restrictions.
